PV Degradation

Thursday, September 27
1:30 PM - 2:50 PM

Ajith R. Weerasinghe

Assistant Professor
Fresno State

I have attended/participated/presented at SPI since 2011. I have over twenty years of PV experience in four countries (PVFication expert), and passionate about PV & EV. I am also a project coordinator for pending 200 MW floating and ground-mounted PV systems. I conduct research into solar cell fabrication, recycling, redox flow batteries and utility-scale PV systems with storage. I have diversified my research into the recycling of PV cells by electrochemical methods and the extraction of dissolved particles from the polluted water of Central Valley, CA.

Ian Gregory

Managing Director
SolarBuyer

Ian has a Masters in Mechanical Engineering and Alternative Energy Technologies from the University of London, UK, and is co-founder and Managing Director of SolarBuyer, LLC.

Ian began his solar career back in 1998 working for the Royal Dutch/Shell Group as New Technology Development Manager within Shell's solar power division in Europe. His focus was on developing flexible thin film and crystalline silicon module technologies. He became Global Product Manager for Shell Solar after acquiring the PV module manufacturing business from Siemens in 2001.

In 2006 Ian became Director of Product Marketing at the Massachusetts based module manufacturer Evergreen Solar. He was responsible for managing the company’s products and marketing efforts until early 2011 when he formed the new company SolarBuyer.

SolarBuyer is a leading provider of independent risk management and quality assurance services for the solar industry. The company has served more than 100 major banks, investors, developers and utility companies, assessed more than 67 GW of PV manufacturing capacity worldwide and managed the quality of more than 8 GW of PV systems.

Through his work for major international companies Ian has gained a wealth of experience from the technology, manufacturing and marketing sides of the solar industry that he now uses to meet the needs of customers concerned about PV quality. SolarBuyer was recently acquired by PI Berlin - a long-established independent PV lab based in Berlin, Germany. The two companies are now in the process of integrating their respective business activites.

A little-known fact about Ian is that he successfully designed and drove a carbon-fiber vehicle across Australia for the World Solar Challenge powered by two off-the-shelf 75W solar panels!

Laks M. Sampath, MSME, MBA

Country Manager, USA/LATAM
Alectris USA, INC.

Laks Sampath heads U.S. and Latin America activities for Alectris. With over a decade of solar PV experience, he articulates a cultivated and seasoned industry perspective in his leadership for the company.

Sampath’s solar photovoltaic expertise covers a wide range of installation sizes, types and terrains. These include sites ranging from 2KW to 20MW; residential, commercial and utility scale construction and design through full commissioning responsibilities. Geographically his expertise encompasses the U.S., Mexico and Italy.

Prior to his post with Alectris, he served as the Director, Operations and Maintenance at NRG Home Solar. His industry career encompasses work with leading firms in the solar industry including Trina Solar, NeoZyte, Inc. and SPG Solar, Inc.

Sampath is a strong advocate of designing optimally performing PV systems and more importantly ensuring years of production with proper attention to operations and maintenance. He has forwarded this vision as a speaker at industry forums including Solar Power International, Solar Power Generation, PV America, Sandia Lab Reliability conferences, the Energy Efficiency and Sustainability Symposium and SunSpec Alliance events.

Sampath serves on O&M working groups for SEIA, the Solar Energy Industries Association and for the SunSpec Alliance.

In addition to being a mechanical engineering graduate of Bangalore University, Sampath holds a MS ME from University of Texas at Arlington and a Masters of Business Administration (MBA) from Santa Clara University in California.

Andreas Wade

Global Sustainability Director
First Solar

Andreas Wade is the Global Sustainability Director at First Solar where he has been in charge of the company’s sustainability program for the past 4 years. Previously, as Director of Technical Relations and Public Affairs in Europe, he supported the long-term business development and market transformation in Europe, towards sustainable photovoltaic (PV) energy generation. Prior to joining First Solar, Andreas designed and implemented the life cycle management strategy for Q-Cells, another PV manufacturing company. He made his first forays into the classical energy sector with Shell Exploration and Production in the UK and the Netherlands, where he worked on energy efficiency improvements, emissions reduction and carbon mitigation. Andreas began his professional career with UNESCO as an Associate Expert on Recycling in the cluster office for the GCC in Doha, Qatar. He has an environmental process engineering background and holds a Master of Engineering degree from the Clausthal University of Technology in Germany. In addition to his role as First Solar’s Global Sustainability Director, Andreas is President of the International Thin-Film Solar Industry Association (PVthin) and elected Chair of the SolarPower Europe Environmental Committee. He currently represents SolarPower Europe in the Steering Committee for the International Sustainability Leadership Standard for PV Modules and is the Deputy Operating Agent of the International Energy Agency’s Photovoltaic Power Systems Program Task 12 on Sustainability (IEA PVPS Task 12). Andreas is a member of the Steering Committee of the European Technology and Innovation Platform Photovoltaics (ETIP PV).
