Welcome & Introduction to Plug & Play DER Challenge - Visionary Interoperability

Can you imagine a future where integration of distributed energy resources, or DERs, are “plug and play”? With the growth of DERs, the industry needs one cohesive way to integrate and interact with the electric grid. This session curated visionary ideas which could catapult forward the work of how facilities with DERs, integrate and interact with the utility grid. Hear from the leading contributors who developed interoperability solutions to lower integration costs, increasing system performance, and enhance capabilities. These solutions display visionary interoperability capabilities and this session will contribute to the next phase of the DER Plug and Play Challenge -- a live hardware/software demonstration of DER being integrated with a utility grid entity (real or simulated), at a public event targeted in 2019.

Jeremiah Miller, MSME, MEEP, PE

Jeremiah Miller is a Technology Manager for the Systems Integration team, joining the Solar Office in October 2016. Prior to this role, Jeremiah was a senior power systems smart grid analyst for Smarter Grid Solutions, where he worked with European and North American utilities to support massive wind and solar energy deployments on distribution grids via grid-edge automation controls that enable the dynamic grid hosting capacity. Through this work, he supported enabling transactive grids, community microgrids, and utility of the future efforts in New York’s Reforming the Energy Vision (REV). Prior to this, he was a solar ombudsman in New York City where he supported market transformation and resilient distributed generation through streamlined permitting, distribution system capacity mapping, and innovative power electronics and energy storage applications.

Steve Widergren

Principal Engineer
Pacific Northwest National Laboratory

Steve Widergren contributes to new solutions for reliable operation of electric power systems. Common throughout his career is the application of information technology to power engineering problems including, simulation, control, and system integration. He is a principal engineer at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory where he directs electric power projects and supports the U.S. Department of Energy. He is a past member of the board and Plenary Chair for the Smart Grid Interoperability Panel (now SEPA) and was also the founding administrator for the GridWise® Architecture Council – both groups formed with the mission to enable interoperability of automated systems related to the electric system. Prior to joining the Laboratory, Mr. Widergren worked in industry for an electricity control center supplier, and electric utility service providers. In these positions, he engineered and managed energy management systems products for electric power operations and supported power system computer applications, including information modeling, SCADA systems, and power system reliability assessment tools. He received his BS and MS degrees in electrical engineering from the University of California, Berkeley, and is actively involved in the IEEE Power & Energy Society and participates in standards efforts that bridge power engineering with information technology.

Bruce Nordman is a Research Scientist with Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, operated by the University of California for the U.S. Department of Energy. His research focuses on the intersection of energy use, electronics, and networks. He works at all network layers from physical layer technology to application layer protocols to user interfaces, with a special focus on power distribution in buildings.
