Open Demand Side Resource Integration Platform (openDSRIP) – An Open-Source framework for enabling flexible grid services

An open-source framework for flexible grid-services enablement employing an approach that utilizes data integration and control abstraction is proposed. The framework is highly aligned with the DER Plug-n-Play interoperability Strategic vision. The crux of the framework involves the definition of the openDSRIP interface (an instance grouping of ESI), a set of logical data exchange and control abstraction APIs, supported by grid-services abstraction and orchestration functions. An implementation of the openDSRIP framework is proposed to demonstrate interoperability for energy price-based net load management and peak capacity management services. The proposal is driven by 3 different organizations representing non-profit research and commercial DER facility management systems.

Siva Sankaranarayanan is a Senior Technical Leader at EPRI in the Energy Utilization division. Siva currently serves as the technical architect for EPRI’s open Demand Side Resource Integration Platform (openDSRIP) framework and is responsible for defining the long-term strategy and vision for openDSRIP and its application for enabling flexible grid-services. Siva also has responsibility as the principal technical architect for data analytics within EPRI’s Advanced Energy Communities suite of projects focusing on standardizing data acquisition, import, data integrity activities and for supporting technology transfer of EPRI’s data analytics work in Advanced Energy Communities. Prior to joining EPRI Siva worked in top-tier firms in telecommunications including Bell labs and AT&T in roles related to software and data architecture and product management. In these roles he has contributed to the development of many standards related to management of optical networks in forums such as the International Telecommunications Union, Internet Engineering Task Force, and Optical Internetworking Forum. Siva holds a Master’s Degree in Electrical Engineering from New York University Tandon School of Engineering.
