When it comes to microgrids, business as usual is anything but usual. But as the deployment of microgrids help usher in the growing distributed energy resource revolution, an understanding of how they are configured and implemented in various market use cases is what this workshop is designed to facilitate. In addition to presentations and discussion with experts addressing microgrid applications in the residential, commercial & industrial, technical (central office, cable head-end and cellular), government & military and utility scale space, at its conclusion, the workshop features an exclusive pre-show visit and demonstration of the multi-vendor on site microgrid in The Smart Energy Microgrid Marketplace on the tradeshow floor. The “visit” will feature open dialog with company experts whose power generation and conversion equipment, energy management systems, monitoring and metering devices, energy storage systems, and solar energy products is used in the “live” microgrid demonstration. As it is increasingly believed that the grid will evolve to be an interconnected “grid of grids” – don’t miss this hear-and-now workshop on how this is being accomplished.

EMerge Alliance

Brian T. Patterson is the President and a founder of the EMerge Alliance, a 501c non-profit corporation developing application standards for hybrid ac/dc powered building and enterprise level microgrids. Patterson has an extensive technical and work history in electronics, fiber optics and building technologies and holds multiple patents in those fields. He is Managing Director of B. L. Coliker Associates, a technology consulting firm and formerly General Manger of Armstrong World Industries. He is the US representative to IEC SysC on LVDC, a member of IEEE and sponsor of its 2030.10 workgroup on electricity access, a representative to NEMA, CABA, SEPA, PSMA, and an active participant in UL/NEMA/NFPA/Emerge task group on DC power. He has held guest professorships in business and innovation management at Long Island University and Susquehanna University.

Jared is the Senior Associate for SEPA’s Advisory Services team of experts in utility business and distributive energy to develop strategic plans for programs, products, and services that drives integration of new technologies and programs into utility resource portfolios and business operations.

Prior to joining SEPA, Jared worked as an environmental consultant at Arcadis US. Jared was responsible for the design, implementation, and management of several environmental programs for both municipal and commercial clients in the energy and water sectors.

Jared holds a bachelor’s degree in civil and environmental engineering from the University of Virginia, where he conducted research on algae-based bio-fuels and focused in sustainable practice. He is currently earning his MS in Energy Policy and Climate from Johns Hopkins University in Washington, DC

Ben Williams

Ben Williams joined EnSync Energy Systems in October 2014 as a product manager for the firm’s energy storage offerings. In this role, he is responsible for analyzing market conditions and driving product development of the company’s energy storage and related products. He has been heavily involved in the development and marketing of the company's new EnSync Home Energy System. Prior to joining EnSync, he served as the Marketing Manager for Samsung SDI’s Energy Solutions group. Ben was responsible for marketing and sales activities related to large format lithium ion battery storage systems for grid and commercial applications in the Americas. There he originated over 50MWh of li-ion based storage systems including several marquee pilot projects to successfully build the company’s market presence. Ben has previously served as an analyst with IHS Emerging Energy Research (EER), a leading provider of research-based analysis, advice, and support to the global renewable power industry. Ben has also conducted market research for Babcock and Wilcox, a major power equipment supplier. Ben holds a M.B.A. from the Weatherhead School of Management at Case Western Reserve University, and a B.A. in Communications from Xavier University.

A graduate of Haverford College (BA Philosophy, 1983), Paul has a background in finance at The First Boston Corporation, Cantor Fitzgerald Corporation, and Lehman Brothers. He also served as the director of marketing and customer finance for V-TRAC Infrastructure Development Company as one of the founding senior managers for the Caterpillar dealership in Hanoi, Vietnam. At Caterpillar, Paul helped grow this start-up to 87 employees, 5 offices, and $22 million in sales in two years. Paul is the current Chair and a Founding Governing Member of the EMerge Alliance; and a member of the advisory board of REIL (the Renewable Energy & International Law Project).

TIM MARTINSON is Strategic Account Executive for EnSync Energy Systems. In his role he is responsible for development of solutions for the Cable and Data Center Industries. His primary focus is implementation of high reliability solutions which incorporates solar, wind and energy storage.
Tim joined EnSync Energy in March of 2017 as Managing Partner and Co-Founder of DCfusion and later joined the EnSync Team to focus on this unique vertical market. Prior to joining EnSync Energy, he held leadership roles in companies who are leaders in automation, power distribution, power quality and microgrid technology. For the last 10 years he is recognized as one of the leaders in the utilization of higher voltage direct current.
He holds an Bachelor of Science in Marketing from The Ohio State University, Columbus, Ohio. He is also currently a contributor in the following organizations, EMerge Alliance, Society of Telecommunications Engineers Standard, and the National Science Foundation ES2 at the Binghamton University. These organizations are key contributors to the creation of use standards and research for the utilization of higher voltage direct current.

Mark Welsko is CTO with WES, LLC. In this role, Mark is responsible for corporate R&D, new product integration, and internal corporate technology development and improvement. He has executive level customer responsibilities and strategic solution development. This also includes management of Director level personnel responsible for delivery of WES services and quality control to end customers.

A big believer in the value of accurate and timely information in the business process, Mark is a strong advocate for simplification of complex problems through education and automation. He is a qualified Professional Engineer and holds a Bachelor of Electrical Engineering degree from the University of Delaware.

Mark is no stranger to the critical infrastructure environments having spent over 30 years in design and management. As a leader and early adopter of modularity, he helped organizations build systems and services incorporating solutions for current needs while maintaining flexibility for future unknowns.

Mark has presented his thoughts and ideas at over 25 different trade events in topics ranging from enhanced reliability, effectiveness of modular deployment, and critical facility monitoring and data acquisition.

Paul Newman is the Microgrid Sales Manager for Caterpillar Inc., covering the Western half of the United States and Canada. Responsible for business development and dealer engagement in the renewable energy, energy storage and hybrid-microgrid industry.
Paul has a BSME from Southern Illinois University – Carbondale, an MBA from Bradley University and a 25+ years professional career focused across both engineering and commercial positions in the electric power industry.

Jim Koeppe

Product Manager - DER Flex Internet of Energy Platform

Jim Koeppe, Product Manager of EnSync Energy’s distributed energy resource software platform, D.E.R. Flex, has more than 15 years of product development experience. With his background in electrical engineering, physics, and mathematics at the University of Minnesota, he entered the tech sector as a design engineer developing wireless technologies for multiple start-up companies in Silicon Valley, California. More recently, Jim led international design teams creating Internet of Things solutions for multiple industries. In 2015, Jim joined EnSync Energy Systems and initiated development of a new line of business around advanced software and control products for the internet of energy. EnSync Energy’s IOE product, DER Flex, was officially released in March 2017 and has been deployed in industrial, commercial, and utility scale projects. The DER Flex software platform is featured in the new EnSync Home Energy System.
