What is The Future of Concentrating Solar Power?

When it comes to solar energy, there is another, less-talked about, but important solar power technology that has been in commercial operation for decades. Concentrating Solar Power (CSP) plants can supply electricity on demand, day or night, through the use of thermal energy storage, and its costs are falling fast as it scales up globally (particularly in China, MENA, and South Africa). As higher penetrations of PV are reached, cost-effective integration will become an increasing challenge and CSP with thermal energy storage can play an important role in reducing dependence on fossils for peaking, load following and/or base load applications. What are the attributes of this synchronous generation resource? And can CSP really compete against PV and batteries, and against gas-fired power? This session will evaluate what’s happening in cost and performance of CSP both internationally and in the United States and assess how CSP can advance both grid reliability and further PV deployment.

Avi Shultz

Dr. Avi Shultz is the program manager for the Solar Energy Technologies Office (SETO) Concentrating Solar Power (CSP) team, which supports research, development, and demonstration of solar thermal components and systems that can enable wide-spread deployment of low-cost CSP with thermal energy storage. Dr. Shultz has been with SETO since 2013, where he started as a policy fellow and was hired as a federal technology manager, supporting the CSP subprogram on a wide variety of topics, including thermochemical energy storage, CSP systems and cost analysis, and non-electricity applications of solar thermal process heat.

Prior to joining SETO, Dr. Shultz was a Rubicon Post-Doctoral Fellow at the University of Amsterdam, where his research focused on developing supramolecular approaches to catalysts for artificial photosynthesis. Dr. Shultz holds a B.A. from Columbia University and a Ph.D. in chemistry from Northwestern University, performing his thesis research on the synthesis of catalytically active porous materials.

Fred Morse

Dr. Morse was responsible for preparing the proposals that resulted in power purchase agreements for the 280 MW Solana and 280 MW Mojave CSP plants and for securing the federal loan guarantees for those two projects. Dr. Morse first became involved in renewable energy issues in the late 1960s when he served as Executive Director of the White House Assessment of Solar Energy as a National Energy Resource. In his work at the US Department of Energy he played a significant role in defining and managing major solar energy R&D programs. Dr. Morse was the Chairman of the Western Governors’ Association Solar Task Force, was a member of the New Mexico CSP Task Force, and is the Chairman of the USP Division of the US Solar Energy Industries Association. Dr. Morse is a graduate of Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, received an M.S. in Nuclear Engineering from MIT and a PhD in Mechanical Engineering from Stanford University.

Abderrahim Jamrani

Mr. Abderrahim Jamrani is the Engineering Director of Masen, electrical energy specialist, he has been active in energy sector for 30 years.
Head of multidisciplinary engineering team, Mr. Jamrani has to identify the appropriate renewable energy mix to be developed in order to respond Moroccan electrical demand, He is also in charge of the feasibility studies of renewable energy projects and to elaborate the technical terms of reference. During the procurement phase the engineering team manage the technical part of the tender until the financial closing.
Prior to Masen, he was the Energy Director for CMH Group a fuel oil supplier, has served as Procurement Director for the National Electric Utility ONEE where he worked beyond other on fossil fuels hedging (coal, gas and oil) and wind parks.
Mr Jamrani Participated actively in the legal, financial and technical structuring of the Moroccan general rural electrification program ‘PERG’. The rural electrification rate in Morocco reached 99 % last year while it was less than 15 % by 1994.
M. Jamrani has a degree in Engineer from INPG Grenoble, France and an MBA from ENPC “Ecole Nationale des Ponts et Chaussée de Paris”.

He is married and father of 3 children.
