Danny Kennedy leads the California Clean Energy Fund, connecting entrepreneurs everywhere to capital to build an abundant clean energy economy that benefits all. This includes overseeing the of $25m for very early stage companies driving innovation and building equity in the California economy. Additionally, CalCEF runs a network of incubators and accelerators globally called New Energy Nexus. Kennedy is also the President of CalCharge, a public-private partnership with DoE National Labs and universities in California, unions and companies, working to advance energy storage.

Kennedy co-founded Sungevity in 2007, the company that created remote solar design, and Powerhouse, a smart energy incubator and accelerator. He was the first backer of Mosaic in 2011, the $2B solar loan provider, and remains on the Board of Powerhive, a solar mini-utility in Kenya and Sunergise, a solar-as-a-service business out of Fiji and the EnergyLabAustralia. He is also a Director of the organizations VoteSolar, Power for All and Confluence Philanthropy and adviser to SolarPhilippines. Kennedy authored the book Rooftop Revolution: How Solar Power Can Save Our Economy – and Our Planet – from Dirty Energy in 2012. Prior to being an entrepreneur, he worked at Greenpeace and other NGOs on climate and energy issues for 20+ years.

Will Mitchell

Will Mitchell leads the government affairs team at Recurrent Energy, advancing the company’s legislative and regulatory initiatives across the United States. With over a decade in the power development space, Will leads the company’s engagement with the Solar Energy Industries Association and serves on the national leadership committee of the Energy Storage Association. He is a participant in the Harvard Electricity Policy Group and serves on the governing body nominating committee of the California Independent System Operator’s Energy Imbalance Market. He previously served as treasurer of the Large-scale Solar Association.

Prior to joining Recurrent Energy, Will spent six years with Competitive Power Ventures, a leading North American independent power producer, where he supported external affairs activities across a multi-state portfolio of combined and simple-cycle natural gas, wind and solar energy facilities.

Will is active in his local community where he serves as a volunteer firefighter. He holds a B.A. in philosophy from Roger Williams University in Bristol, Rhode Island.

Mr. Smutny-Jones has represented IEP since 1987. He has been a pivotal player in the California restructuring efforts, market reform, global climate change, and renewable energy policies. He served as Chair of the Governing Board of the California Independent System Operator, was a member of the Governing Board of the California Power Exchange, and he served on the Board of Directors for the Renewable Certification Program, “Green-E”. He also served as a member of the California Air Resources Board’s Economic and Technology Advancement Advisory Committee for Climate Change, and is an active member of the Yolo Basin Foundation.

Mr. Smutny-Jones is a graduate of Loyola Law School and is a member of the American, California State and Sacramento County Bar Associations. He has a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science from California State University, Long Beach, and he holds a certificate in Environmental Management from the University of Southern California.

Laura Wisland

Laura is the Senior Energy of Western States Energy in UCS’s Climate and Energy program, where she works on state and regional policies related to clean energy, air quality, and global warming. As part of her work on renewable energy issues, Laura provides technical and policy analysis to legislative and regulatory agencies that develop and implement clean energy policies and renewable integration solutions for West Coast states.

Prior to coming to UCS, Laura was the Director of the California Hydropower Reform Coalition where she helped design several state and federal policies to reduce the environmental impacts of California’s existing network of hydropower dams. Laura has a masters degree from UC Berkeley’s Goldman School of Public Policy, and was a Morehead-Cain scholar at the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill, where she received a bachelor’s degree in public policy.
