PV Recycling: What to Do When Your Panel's Useful Life is Over

All good things come to an end, including the life of solar panels. The industry standard life span, of 25 years, means some panels are nearing retirement. This session will investigate the latest in PV recycling, where policy is in place, why and how the solar industry is working with commercial recycling companies, and how to refurbish or recycle solar panels.

Evelyn Butler

Senior Director, Codes and Standards
Solar Energy Industries Association (SEIA)

As Sr. Director of Codes and Standards, Evelyn leads SEIA's codes & standards and environmental, health and safety initiatives and advocacy efforts. She heads SEIA’s work with the Codes & Standards Working Group, the Mounting Systems Manufacturers Committee, the Corporate Social Responsibility Committee which includes the PV Recycling Working Group, the Operations & Maintenance Working Group and the Installer Safety & Workforce Development Working Group.

Evelyn joined SEIA after 25 years at UL LLC (Underwriters Laboratories Inc.), spending the last 11 years in renewables business management. Evelyn was instrumental in developing UL’s solar business globally, managing business strategy and service portfolio development and held roles in regional business management, sales and marketing, and testing / certification. Evelyn has a BA in Social Sciences from UC Berkeley and Executive Education from Yale University’s School of Management and UC Berkeley Haas School of Business.

Jill Engel-Cox

Director, Joint Institute for Strategic Energy Analysis
National Renewable Energy Laboratory

Jill Engel-Cox is Director of the Joint Institute for Strategic Energy Analysis (JISEA) at the U.S. National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL). Over her 25-year career, Dr. Engel-Cox has been an engineer, researcher, program manager, and strategic planner for a diverse suite of renewable energy, clean technology, and environmental programs in the United States, Asia, and Middle East. Her first job was climbing smokestacks in Los Angeles, followed by leading industrial pollution prevention programs for small and medium sized businesses and R&D laboratories in the United States and internationally. In the past decade, she has led international strategic planning and technology assessments for renewable energy and environmental sustainability research programs, working extensively in Malaysia and Saudi Arabia. She also teaches industrial processes and environmental communications courses at Johns Hopkins University Engineering for Professionals Program.

Cara Libby, MS

Senior Technical Leader
Electric Power Research Institute

Cara Libby manages a diverse portfolio of solar research projects within EPRI’s Renewable Generation Program. Most recently her work has focused on PV life cycle analysis, including PV recycling, field assessments of PV performance and reliability, and accelerated aging of PV modules to predict degradation rates. Ms. Libby is a mechanical engineer with a Bachelor’s degree from Johns Hopkins University and a Masters degree from Stanford University. She has over 10 years of solar research experience.
