Even though energy storage remains one of the hottest topics, the industry has a long way to go before grid operators recognize (and compensate) storage assets for all of the benefits they provide. This session will investigate these benefits provide to the grid and assess the unique financial challenges and opportunities associated with the contractual flexibility necessary to permit the various uses storage systems serve, or could serve, in to the future.

Jacqueline is an expert in the energy regulatory arena and helps her clients with understanding the requirements for participation in the wholesale markets. Jacqueline actively contributed to the Massachusetts State of Charge report, which highlights the multiple values that energy storage can provide. She is a frequent speaker on cutting edge subjects impacting the storage industry at both domestic and international venues. She has served as an expert on evaluation panels for the US Department of Energy’s (DOE) smart grid and storage projects. Jacqueline is on the Board of Directors for the national Energy Storage Association (ESA).

Jacqueline has over 25 years of experience in the energy industry. Prior to joining CES in 2007, she worked for the California ISO in the market design and account management areas. She has also worked on international energy sector restructuring matters for the USAID, and in project development for an independent power producer. She began her career at FERC. Jacquie has a B.A. from Rutgers University and an M.B.A. from George Washington University.

Praveen Kathpal is Vice President of Market Applications at Fluence, a leading energy storage technology and services company formed as a joint venture between Siemens and AES. He served as Chair of the Board of Directors of the Energy Storage Association from 2017-2018. His responsibilities at Fluence include accelerating global energy storage market growth, and bringing energy storage to new markets, new customers, and new applications. He previously served as Vice President of Market Development at AES Energy Storage. Mr. Kathpal joined AES in 2007. Prior to joining AES, Mr. Kathpal was a consultant at ICF International. He holds a BA in Economics and a MBA from the University of Virginia.

Troy Miller is the Head of Energy Storage Sales for GE Power. He has over 25 years of experience in the Power Engineering industry. Mr. Miller has lengthy experience in the application and implementation of all aspects of power electronics and power quality. Mr. Miller is the Vice Chairman of the Board of Directors at the Energy Storage Association (ESA), and a member of the board at the National Alliance for Advanced Technology Batteries (NAATBatt). Mr. Miller is a speaker at industry events around the world covering market trends and economic benefit analysis. He has published numerous papers and articles in technical journals and media outlets. He currently has responsibility for Energy Storage and Hybrids in North America.

Jigar Shah is the co-founder of Generate Capital and an entrepreneur committed to leveraging the next economy by deploying existing technologies that solve the challenging issues of our time. He is author of the book: Creating Climate Wealth: Unlocking the Impact Economy.

He is the President of Generate Capital and a board member of sPower and the Rocky Mountain Institute. He served as the Carbon War Room’s first CEO from 2009-2012.

Shah’s first foray into realizing his vision of climate wealth was the founding of SunEdison in 2003; which remains the world’s leading solar services company. At SunEdison, Shah simplified solar as a service by implementing the power purchase agreement (PPA) business model. The SunEdison business model enabled massive, scalable deployment of existing solar technology that turned solar into a multi-billion dollar industry worldwide. Prior to SunEdison, Shah worked within strategy at BP Solar, and before that was a contractor for the Department of Energy on vehicles and fuel cell programs.

Shah holds a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Illinois, Champaign- Urbana, and an M.B.A. from The University of Maryland. He sits on the boards of the sPower, Carbon War Room, and Empower Energies.
