This session will consider ways to minimize the financial risks associated with operating solar assets, the effects of capital cost reductions, and OP-EX considerations on long-term maintainability.

Laks Sampath heads U.S. and Latin America activities for Alectris. With over a decade of solar PV experience, he articulates a cultivated and seasoned industry perspective in his leadership for the company.

Sampath’s solar photovoltaic expertise covers a wide range of installation sizes, types and terrains. These include sites ranging from 2KW to 20MW; residential, commercial and utility scale construction and design through full commissioning responsibilities. Geographically his expertise encompasses the U.S., Mexico and Italy.

Prior to his post with Alectris, he served as the Director, Operations and Maintenance at NRG Home Solar. His industry career encompasses work with leading firms in the solar industry including Trina Solar, NeoZyte, Inc. and SPG Solar, Inc.

Sampath is a strong advocate of designing optimally performing PV systems and more importantly ensuring years of production with proper attention to operations and maintenance. He has forwarded this vision as a speaker at industry forums including Solar Power International, Solar Power Generation, PV America, Sandia Lab Reliability conferences, the Energy Efficiency and Sustainability Symposium and SunSpec Alliance events.

Sampath serves on O&M working groups for SEIA, the Solar Energy Industries Association and for the SunSpec Alliance.

In addition to being a mechanical engineering graduate of Bangalore University, Sampath holds a MS ME from University of Texas at Arlington and a Masters of Business Administration (MBA) from Santa Clara University in California.

Brad Forth

Mr. Forth is a senior advisor to Oaktree’s GFI Energy Group. He helps the team anticipate growth opportunities in the power, utility and energy sectors, and invest its capital in leading companies, helping management teams to accelerate the growth of their businesses. Mr. Forth has spent his entire career in the energy industry. He began his career as a design engineer at Power Measurement, Inc., where he was responsible for pioneering research in the field of digital power metering and energy management systems. Mr. Forth remained at Power Measurement in various capacities for 18 years, the last nine as its CEO. In 2006, he joined GFI Energy Group as a partner. Mr. Forth was a former board member of Xantrex Technology and OpTerra Energy Group, and a former board chair of GT Solar Incorporated, Turbine Generator Maintenance, Cannon Technologies, GoodCents and TenK Solar. He is currently a board member of Shoals Technologies Group, a manufacturer of electrical balance of systems components for the solar industry, and executive chairman of Array Technologies, Inc., a leading supplier of trackers for utility scale solar applications. Mr. Forth received a Bachelor of Electrical Engineering degree from the University of Victoria in Canada. He was winner of the 2002 Ernst and Young award for “Pacific Entrepreneur of the Year – Technology and Communications” and has been a member of Young Presidents’ Organization since 1998.

Jim Piotrowski is director, distributed energy resources (DER) for Arizona Public Service Company (APS). Based in Phoenix, APS is Arizona’s largest electric company and serves nearly 1.2 million customers across the state.

Through his leadership, Piotrowski has helped APS build the largest solar fleet in Arizona, investing more than $800 million in solar projects during the last eight years that have resulted in ~1,900 solar installations and more than 250 megawatts of solar power. The team manages Micro Grids up to 25MW and utility scale and residential energy storage projects.

Piotrowski’s continued leadership has been critical in propelling APS forward to become an innovative leader in the DER industry. He has proven success developing organizations and individuals, and is adept at optimizing resources, solving key organizational problems and promoting innovative solutions in complex environments.

Prior to leading the solar generation team, Jim held a number of critical leadership positions at APS over the past 30 years. He has broad utility experience that includes energy delivery, fossil generation and facilities.

Jim is very involved in the community and actively serves on community boards including St. Joseph the Worker and ASU’s Master’s in Solar Engineering & Commercialization Programs.

Marty Rogers

Martin (Marty) Rogers is the Vice President of Global Asset Management and Support at NEXTracker, the global market share leader in solar tracker systems and storage systems company. Marty manages a fleet of over 13 gigawatts of solar trackers on six continents.

Prior to NEXTracker, Marty was the Vice President, Global Service and Support and GM for Next Phase Solar Services at Enphase Energy, a pioneer in Microinverter technology for the solar industry. As the Global VP of Services for Power One, Marty managed a complete service network that included both field intervention teams as well as backroom support and repair teams. Prior to Power One, Marty spent over 15 years at Schneider Electric, a €26 B global company focused on energy management with operations in more than 100 countries. He also served as Director of WW Service Support managing global teams in product development, international marketing and services.

With a career spanning multiple continents and countries, including dozens of various regulatory and utility organizations, Marty has created field and support service organizations across the world. His background and experience range from High Voltage Power Distribution Systems to Advance Automation Control and Micro Inverters Systems. Creating highly reliable and repeatable service offers, while improving the customer’s overall satisfaction and reliability are the hallmarks for Marty’s global service and support background. Emphasizing the growing need for preemptive, comprehensive and repeatable services in the solar industry is one of Marty's key goals as a professional.

Marty is a graduate of the State University of New York, and holds an MBA in International Business from Washington State University.
