Utility-scale solar has been generating reliable clean energy and devoid of fuel prices for more than two decades. But the primary drivers of U.S. utility-scale PV are shifting. This session will examine these changes in the utility-scale solar landscape, including its emergence as a major wholesale power market participant, the business case for pairing solar with storage, how different market drivers are shifting, and how these changes create development opportunities.

Shannon Eddy

Shannon Eddy, is the founding Executive Director of the Large-Scale Solar Association (LSA), a trade association of leading utility-scale solar developers and companies. LSA's purpose is to advance - via sound policies - the development of large-scale facilities throughout California and the southwest. She is also founder of the Conscious Ventures Group, Inc. (CVG), a consulting firm providing progressive policy advancement solutions and strategic advice to businesses, philanthropies and non-profits.

Prior to starting CVG and LSA, Shannon served as the energy efficiency and renewables advisor on Governor Schwarzenegger’s energy policy team. Based at the California Public Utilities Commission, she served as the primary renewables and efficiency liaison for the administration. Shannon was instrumental in developing renewable energy action plans, and developing clean energy policies. She was also an original member of Schwarzenegger’s Climate Action Team.

Prior to joining the administration, Shannon spent a decade working with the California environmental community on issues that included air quality, energy, and climate. In addition to having worked for the Sierra Club California, she also represented the Natural Resources Defense Council, the Center for Energy Efficiency and Renewable Technologies, and the Clean Power Campaign. As a lobbyist, she was instrumental in the passage of California’s Renewable Portfolio Standard and the Pavley greenhouse gas emission bill.

Tom is president and co-founder of 8minutenergy. He brings over 20 years of executive management experience in large-scale project development, solar and utility power markets, land entitlement, M&A, capital structuring and finance. Tom has led transactions totaling over $5 billion in power purchase agreements and project finance deals.

Prior to co-founding 8minutenergy, Tom was a successful entrepreneur, real estate developer, and project manager for McKinsey & Company in Europe and the U.S. He earned his Ph.D. in physics and astronomy from the California Institute of Technology (CalTech).

Ted Reguly

Director, Growth and Technology Integration

Ted Reguly is the director of Growth and Technology Integration at San Diego Gas and Electric (SDG&E). He is responsible for overseeing SDG&E’s Growth in non-traditional Utility areas, including Energy Storage, Microgrids and other areas as it relates to SDG&E’s leadership in clean, safe, and reliable energy delivery.

Reguly’ s previous director positions were at Sempra Renewables Operations, SDG&E’s Substation and Transmission Operations and Maintenance, Customer Programs, Smart Meter, and Customer Services Organizations.

Reguly is a registered California Mechanical Engineer and holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering from California State, Long Beach and a Masters in Business Administration with an emphasis in Finance from San Diego State University

For 30 years, Dan Shugar has helped advance renewable energy in the U.S. and around the globe. As Founder and CEO of NEXTracker, Dan brings together solar expertise and technology innovation in a way few technology leaders have. In five years, he created a solar start-up in the Balance of Systems (BOS) manufacturing segment and drove a successful acquisition with investment grade component manufacturer, Flex. Since founding NEXTracker, the Company has held global market share leadership for three consecutive years and has delivered over 13 GW of products and services on six continents. Prior to NEXTracker, he grew Solaria Corporation’s annual revenue five times over a three year period. Well-known for his leadership as president of SunPower Corporation and president of PowerLight, he surrounds himself with passionate, tech-savvy, clean energy-driven executive teams who share his mission to make solar a mainstream energy source. He holds multiple U.S. patents and has published over 50 technical papers.

Mr. Shugar holds a BS in electrical engineering from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and an MBA from Golden Gate University. If asked of his most coveted achievement, he would most likely mention the six years he served as a Board Member of the Sierra Club where we worked on the Beyond Coal Campaign. He currently sits on the Board of Directors for the Solar Energy Industry Association (SEIA), Advanced Energy Economy (AEE), and The Solar Foundation (TSF).
