The Board of Directors is one of the most VITAL aspects of a successful nonprofit, yet board development and governance is often put to the back burner. If a nonprofit is strong at this level it will trickle down throughout an organization. If it is weak even the most dedicated and highly trained staff won’t be able to truly fulfill an agency’s mission. As the future of the work we do and the services we provide looks more and more uncertain in this political arena it is imperative that as The Arc’s executive team that we are working together to develop strong board leadership across the country. Developing a BOD is not a one size fits all model. Together we can utilize each other as resources through discussion of tips, tools and tricks of the trade.
Topics that will be discussed in this presentation are: What type of BOD do you have? What type of BOD does your organization need? Are you succession planning for BOD leadership? Does your BOD TRULY understand their fiduciary, ethical and legal responsibilities? What happens if you are struggling to effectively communicate with a member of the board? Does your BOD evaluate your performance, if so what does that look like? To address these topics and other areas we will be using “real-life” examples from CEO’s from across the country and use this presentation as a forum to discuss their experiences and what can work best for you. You will leave this presentation with tips, tools and best practices as well as a support network of peers in a similar set of shoes.
