Stem Cells, Tissue engineering, and 3D models. These technologies are advancing fast and have the potential to substitute or complement predictive animal models for toxicology and efficacy studies. Development and validation of these models involve not only engineering but appropriate cell types derived from stem cells. Merging of tissue engineering tools and sophisticated biology with iPS cells enable tissue and organ cultures for more predictable in-vivo data in humans. Advances in these disruptive technologies would validate these tools for use in successful preclinical discovery and translation into the clinic. In this session, we will have two leading experts in this area give talks on their research. Active participation from the audience on the advantages, disadvantages and future developments is highly encouraged. Our two speakers:
1. Christian Metallo, Assoc Professor, Bioengineering, UCSD, His title: Nutrient availability impacts the metabolic development of iPSCs and their derivatives
2. Alysson Muotri, Professor, Director of the Stem Cell Program, Institute for Genomic Medicine, Dept. of Pediatrics & Cellular Molecular Medicine, UCSD School of Medicine. Her title: “Development of functional brain organoids for drug discovery”.

Alysson R. Muotri

Dr. Muotri earned a BSc in Biological Sciences from the State University of Campinas in 1995 and a Ph.D. in Genetics in 2001 from University of Sao Paulo, in Brazil. He moved to the Salk Institute as Pew Latin America Fellow in 2002 for a postdoctoral training in the fields of neuroscience and stem cell biology. He has been a Professor at the School of Medicine, University of California in San Diego since late 2008. His research focuses on modeling neurological diseases, such as Autism Spectrum Disorders, using human induced pluripotent stem cells. His lab has developed several techniques to culture human neurons and glia for basic research and drug-screening platforms. He has received several awards, including the prestigious NIH Director’s New Innovator Award, NARSAD, Emerald Foundation Young Investigator Award, Surugadai Award from Tokyo University, Rock Star of Innovation from CONNECT, NIH EUREKA Award among others.
