Environmental impact on liquid handling

This tutorial will teach about the impact that environmental conditions have on liquid handling. Liquid handler performance can be optimized by adjusting system operating parameters, but the effect of environmental conditions (air temperature, relative humidity, atmospheric pressure) on liquid handling quality is often under appreciated.
The impact of these conditions will be described in this tutorial. More specifically, the effect of two environmental factors (air temperature and relative humidity) on the volumetric performance of an air displacement liquid handler will be discussed. A Tecan Freedom EVO® pipetting robot, equipped with a liquid LiHa (Liquid Handling Arm) was used to demonstrate how the environment can impact any air displacement pipetting device.
Tecan recommends that the Tecan Freedom EVO be installed in a controlled environment. However, some users choose to operate in less controlled conditions. This tutorial will help users understand how to determine the best path forward when testing in different environmental conditions.

He is actively involved in international standards development, and is current chair of ASTM E41.06 (Laboratory Instruments), ASTM E41.91 (US Technical Advisory Group to ISO TC 48 - Laboratory Equipment), and is the Convenor of ISO TC 48 / WG 04 (Pipetting). He is a chemical engineer with a bachelors degree from the University of California - Berkeley, and a doctorate from the University of Wisconsin - Madison.
