Data Analysis and Informatics

Advanced Analytics and Visualisation for Biology Big Data

Monday, February 5
10:30 AM - 11:00 AM
Location: 8

The scientific field will soon overtake Astrophysics as the major producer of data within the scientific domain. Not only is this data large, it is also complex and has many different forms of data that need to be represented together intuitively so a user can discover knowledge. Therefore, biological data represents a visualization challenge because of complexity, size and diversity; additionally, the analytic algorithms need to be designed with ""thinking outside the box"" while grounded in concepts that the user can understand.
This talk will present the program Vortex [Dotmatics Ltd] that has incorporated multiple biological visualization that can handle multiple data types together and allow interactive manipulation of this data on the scale of genomes on the standard user laptop. The program additionally integrates biology with a multitude of data types including advanced chemical analytics. The talk will also show how multiple data reduction analytical techniques have been integrated to enable users both visualize information and discover knowledge within biology. This covers the concepts of hypothesis testing and discovery mining and how this is integrated within graphical representations that are simple to understand by easy to manipulate and work with.
