Transforming Science: How the “Smart Lab” is the Key to Unlocking Results

The “Internet of Things” (or IoT) is transforming virtually every workplace, and science-based industries are no exception. In fact, technology is poised to radically transform science-based discovery – as soon as it is harnessed correctly. While highly complex, these industries are among the last to truly benefit from using IoT to enhance the automation efforts that are key to high-throughput technologies and related fields.

With an influx of next-generation Science 2.0 companies, this is all changing. These companies, many based on IoT technologies specifically applied to the world of science, are bringing the rigor and automation that prevail in manufacturing to earlier stages of scientific product research and discovery, from pharma to synthetic biology and much more.

By automatically gathering new data streams for scientists – filling data “gaps” in their work – and automating the execution of protocols to eliminate human variability, the implications include faster time to results, faster time to market, and better understanding of scientific processes.

Simply put, harnessing the technologies that have provided the building blocks for the IoT and applying them to scientific processes has widespread benefits. It helps teams identify unknown factors that may be contributing to outcomes – essentially the proverbial “needle in the haystack" – and accelerates discovery.

Automation will also transform roles within science-based departments – and unlike some industries, will not eliminate jobs at the scale some predict. Instead, technology will streamline processes so employees can be more efficient and strategic. Teams no longer need to use staff to manually record, enter and model data. Nor do teams need to be in the lab 24x7 to monitor their experiments. Instead staff can use their time for more value-added work to further optimize team performance.

This talk will explore how IoT enhances automation efforts and fundamentally reshapes science-based work environments and the implications for people in all roles – from research to operations management.

A serial entrepreneur in connected medical devices and wearables, Sridhar is focused on strategy and management at Elemental Machines. Previously, he was a founder and CTO of Misfit, makers of elegant wearable products, which was acquired by Fossil in 2015. Prior to Misfit, he founded AgaMatrix, the blood glucose monitoring company that made the world’s first medical device connecting directly to the iPhone, that also has partnerships with Apple, Sanofi, and Walgreens. With a diverse background that spans from connected devices, to consumer products, to advanced healthcare solutions, Sridhar understands first-hand the opportunities that new technologies offer science-based teams, and the progression of steps organizations must take to fully leverage the IoT for maximum impact. Sridhar holds over 30 U.S. and international patents and received his Ph.D. from Cambridge University as a Marshall Scholar, with a B.S. in Electrical Engineering from the University of Illinois.
