1007-C - Design and optimization of pressure sensitive adhesive tapes for the assembly of precision medical device consumables

In the field of medical diagnostics, pressure sensitive adhesive (PSA) tapes are often used in the construction of precision consumable devices. PSA tapes can be die cut or laser cut to form micro- or nanofluidic channels or can act as cover tapes for wells in plastic cartridges. When selecting such tapes, there are several important factors to consider, including the surfaces to be bonded (including any modifications/treatments), temperature requirements, chemicals exposed to adhesive/surface interface, optical properties (optically clear or low autofluorescence), and interaction of biological components with residual contents. Due to the diversity of substrates, components, and assays used in consumables, a single tape cannot address all of these needs for every application. However, through careful manipulation of the chemical composition of adhesives and substrates, an optimal tape may be developed for even the most challenging use cases. Strategies to obtain such results are discussed in this presentation.
