The Power Query M Language is now the common data access layer across the MSBI platform including Analysis Services, Power BI, and Excel. This session will walk through examples of utilizing M queries in each of these products to access and enhance the value of source data. Within these examples, fundamental concepts will be described including query folding, parameters, and staging queries. Additionally, tools for developing and managing M queries will be reviewed including the Power Query SDK for Visual Studio and the Power Query M Language extension for Visual Studio Code.
Brett is a business intelligence consultant, an author, and the owner of Frontline Analytics, a Microsoft Power BI partner. In his work at Frontline Analytics, Brett partners with clients on a range of topics including technical architecture, solution design, management and administration, internal training and performance optimization. In addition to consulting, Brett has authored the Microsoft Power BI Cookbook, which was published in September of 2017, and has recently completed his second book, Mastering Microsoft Power BI scheduled to published in April of 2018.
Brett also maintains Insight Quest, a blog dedicated to Microsoft BI development tools and techniques, and is the organizer of the Boston Business Intelligence user group. Typically a new blog post is published every week and Brett helps to coordinate speakers and sponsors for monthly Boston BI events. Additionally, Brett is a regular speaker at Power BI and MSBI events such as the Power BI World Tour - New York in 2017, SQL Saturday, and Boston Code Camp.
Prior to Frontline Analytics, Brett was a consultant and technical architect at other MSBI consulting firms with a focus on Analysis Services Tabular models and Power BI deployments. Brett has also worked as a corporate business intelligence developer as well as an analytics manager operating within a business unit. These diverse experiences have shaped his experience in the opportunities and challenges with both self-service business intelligence and corporate business intelligence.
