IACUC Challenges for Small Organizations

This session will be a networking and idea sharing opportunity for attendees from small institutions. Speakers and attendees will focus on how to manage an IACUC with limited resources, creative solutions for challenges inherent to small organizations, and common sources of administrative burden. During this session, speakers and attendees will:

Bruce W. Kennedy, MS, RLATG, CMAR, CPIA, EdD

Bruce W. Kennedy received his BS in zoology and MS in avian sciences at UC Davis, and his EdD in educational leadership at California State Polytechnic University, Pomona (CPP). His career is a mix of animals, chemistry, training, and people, which started in California and included 19 years in Virginia and Maryland, in research and academic institutions in the disciplines of nutrition, physiology, and developmental biology. Bruce started in lab animal using coturnix quail in nutritional toxicology. He worked at the bench (analytical chemistry) with dogs in protein metabolism and rats in carbohydrate nutrition studies (USDA), writing GLP toxicology reports (Hazleton), preparing experimental diets with test substances (FDA), and managing mouse facilities (NIH and Caltech). At CPP, he was responsible for regulatory compliance (IRB and IACUC), while assisting researchers. Currently he is the IACUC administrator at Chapman University and a lecturer on lab animal science at CPP. He holds LATG, CMAR, and CPIA certifications. Bruce is past president of LAWTE and AALAS, director of the California Society for Biomedical Research, and recipient of the B&K IAT, the AALAS Collins, and the Purina tech awards. He serves as an ad hoc specialist with AAALACi.

Felicia started in the Laboratory Animal Science Profession in 2002 as a Veterinary Technician. Felicia has experience as a Research Technician, ABSL3 Containment Technician, Training Coordinator, and IACUC Administrator and has worked with a variety of species including NHPs, guinea pigs, canines, rabbits, ferrets, hamsters, and rodents. Felicia began focusing her career on IACUC and Compliance in 2004 and led GLP studies as a technician lead. Her dynamic background provides valuable insight to IACUC concerns and regulations while balancing scientific needs and communications. A particular focus is to faciliate communications between compliance and the laboratory in an attempt to make necessary regulations "not as painful." Currently, she is the IACUC Administrator at Texas Biomedical Research Institute, a host of the Southwest National Primate Research Center.
