Institutions receiving federal funds to support animal research must verify the animal activities described in a grant proposal have been approved by the institution. During this session, speakers and attendees will:

Research regulatory professional with demonstrated experience in non-profit academic biomedical research, knowledge of federal, state and local regulations governing pre-clinical and clinical research activities. Vice-Chair, Council for Certified Professional IACUC Administration (CCPIA®). Over 17 years of experience in administration, regulatory compliance; establishing and directing the operations of efficient and effective systems for regulatory oversight and administration of research programs with a focus on integrating organizational core values and service standards into research support services and regulatory oversight programs.

Doreen H. Bartlett, BS, AA, RVT, LATG

Senior Assurance Officer, Division of Assurances
National Institutes of Health, OLAW

Ms. Doreen H. Bartlett joined the Office of Laboratory Animal Welfare in November 2012 as a Senior Assurance Officer with the Division of Assurances. Ms. Bartlett came to OLAW with thirty-six years of animal experience, twenty-two of those years in biomedical research involving animals. She obtained her Bachelor of Science degree in Animal Science from the University of Maryland and an Associate of Arts in Veterinary Technology from Essex Community College. She is certified as a Laboratory Animal Technologist with the American Association for Laboratory Scientists (AALAS) as well as being certified as a Registered Veterinary Technician (RVT) with the AVMA in Maryland. In 1990, Ms. Bartlett came to the NIH as a contractor with the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD). In 1996, Ms. Bartlett became the Government Manager of the NICHD Shared Facility and subsequently the Laboratory Facilities and Fisheries Manager for NICHD in 2002, managing a diversity of aquatic facilities including zebrafish and Xenopus as well as the 19,000 tank shared zebrafish facility on the Bethesda campus.

IACUC Office Director; Veterinarian
University of Iowa

Nancy Figler Marks has been the Director of the IACUC Office and IACUC Veterinarian at the University of Iowa since 2012. Previously she worked for 14 years in various veterinary and regulatory roles with Parke Davis and later Pfizer.
