Dr. Lebwohl is a graduate of Harvard College, where he majored in music. He received his MD from Columbia College of Physicians and Surgeons in 2003, and then completed his internship, residency, and chief residency in internal medicine at Columbia. He stayed at Columbia as a fellow in Digestive and Liver Disease, during which time he obtained a Masters in Patient Oriented Research from the Department of Biostatistics at the Mailman School of Public Health. Based at the Celiac Disease Center at Columbia University, Dr. Lebwohl is collaborating with institutions in the United States and abroad in the areas of the epidemiology, patterns of care, and the natural history of celiac disease. He is a prior recipient of the American Gastroenterology Association Research Scholar Award (2014-2017), studying the health effects of gluten in large cohort studies. He is an associated scholar at the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm, Sweden, where he performs population-based research in celiac disease in the Department of Medical Epidemiology and Biostatistics.

Caroline M. Apovian, M.D., FACP, FTOS, DABOM, is Professor of Medicine and Pediatrics, in the Section of Endocrinology, Diabetes, and Nutrition at Boston University School of Medicine, USA. She is also Director of the Center for Nutrition and Weight Management at Boston Medical Center, USA. Dr. Apovian is a nationally and internationally recognized authority on Nutrition and Obesity Medicine and has been in the field of Obesity and Nutrition for nearly three decades. Her current research interests are in: weight loss and its effects on endothelial cell function, obesity and cardiovascular disease, adipose cell metabolism and inflammation, resolution of diabetes and cardiovascular disease in the bariatric surgery population, disparities in the treatment of obesity in underserved populations and novel pharmacotherapeutic agents for the treatment of obesity. She is also an expert in research techniques for sampling subcutaneous adipose tissue and muscle biopsies, and has been studying the relationship between adipose tissue inflammation and obesity for over 10 years.

Scott Shikora, MD, FACS, FASMBS is a board certified general surgeon who has been involved in minimally invasive general and bariatric surgery for over 20 years. He attended medical school at Columbia University College of Physicians & Surgeons and completed his surgical residency and Nutrition Support fellowship at New England Deaconess Hospital in Boston. He then spent the next four years as a major and staff surgeon in the United States Air Force. He is a member of several medical societies and he was active in committees and leadership. He is a Past President and former Board of Directors member of the American Society for Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition. He was also both a Past President and a former Executive Council member of the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery. He currently is on the Executive Council and several committees of the International Federation for the Surgery of Obesity and Metabolic Disorders.

Dr. Shikora is an Associate Editor of the surgical journal Surgery for Obesity and Related Diseases and the current Editor-in-Chief of Obesity Surgery. Dr. Shikora has authored numerous book chapters and journal publications and has made hundreds of international and national presentations on bariatric surgery and nutrition support topics. He also developed and directs the Bariatric Summit, an annual American bariatric conference and The World Congress for the Advancement of Surgery, an international surgical conference held in Israel.

Dr. Shikora worked at Tufts Medical Center in Boston for over 16 years where he was the Director of the Weight and Wellness Center, and Chief of the Divisions of Bariatric and General Surgery. During his tenure at Tufts Medical Center, he was also a Professor of Surgery at Tufts University School of Medicine. Currently, he is a Professor of Surgery at Harvard Medical School and the Director of the Center for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston. He is also the Chief Medical Officer of ReShape Lifesciences, the device company that has developed the reversible vagal nerve blocking device, vBloc and the ReShape Dual Intragastric Balloon.

Dr. Shikora has also won numerous awards. In 2011, he was awarded the Distinguished Alumni Award from his alma mater, Muhlenberg College. In 2015 he was given the ASMBS Foundation Outstanding Achievement Award. In 2017, he was honored with the President’s Award from International Federation for the Surgery of Obesity and Metabolic Disorders and the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award from Marquis Who’sWho. He has been recognized by Castle Connolly, as one of America’s Top Doctors from 2005-2017 and Boston Magazine’s Top Doctors from 2008-2017.

Dr. Scott Shikora lives in Sharon, Massachusetts with Susan his wife of 33 years. He has 3 children; Jonathan, Katie, and Samuel.

John P. Foreyt, PhD

John P. Foreyt received his PhD in clinical psychology in 1969 from Florida State University. He served on the faculty there until 1974 when he moved to Baylor College of Medicine, Houston, Texas. He currently is Professor at the Baylor College of Medicine’s Department of Medicine and Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences. He also is the Director of the DeBakey Heart Center’s Behavioral Medicine Research Center.


Dr. Foreyt has served as a member of the National Task Force on the Prevention and Treatment of Obesity, National Institutes of Health; The Committee to Develop Criteria for Evaluating the Outcomes of Approaches to Prevent and Treat Obesity, Food and Nutrition Board, Institute of Medicine, National Academy of Sciences; and The Expert Panel on the Identification, Evaluation, and Treatment of Overweight and Obesity in Adults, National Institutes of Health, NHLBI.



He has published extensively in the areas of diet modification, cardiovascular risk reduction, eating disorders, and obesity. He has more than 400 publications, including 17 books. He is a member of the editorial boards of: Eating
Disorders; Obesity Research and Clinical Practice; American Journal of Lifestyle Medicine; American Journal of Health Behavior; Obesity and Weight Management; American Journal of Health Promotion; and Nutrition Today.


Dr. Foreyt is a Fellow of the Society of Behavioral Medicine, a Fellow of The Obesity Society, and a Fellow of the Academy of Behavioral Medicine Research. He is a Life Member of the American Psychological Association and an honorary member of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics.

Dr. Lucia Aronica is an Adjunct Professor in the Department of Medicine at Stanford University, where she leads the epigenetic analysis of the largest randomized clinical trial ever undertaken in the field of personalized nutrition on low carb vs. low fat diets — the DIETFITS study by Prof Christopher Gardner. The focus of her research is investigating how diet affects gene activity through epigenetic modifications, and whether we can use epigenetic biomarkers to design personalized weight loss plans.

Lucia is also a lecturer in Nutritional Genomics and Epigenomics at Stanford Continuing Studies and the Stanford Center for Professional Development, and an Adjunct Professor of Physiology at San Jose State University. She serves as an advisor for personal genomics companies, self-tracking technology businesses, and companies interested in investing in precision health research.

Lucia received her PhD from the Universität Wien, and has research experience from the University of Oxford, University of Southern California, and University Federico II of Naples. She has published research papers in top-ranked peer reviewed journals such as Cell, Genes and Development, and the EMBO Journal.

Jorge E. Chavarro, M.D., Sc.D., is Associate Professor of Nutrition and Epidemiology at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health and of Medicine at Harvard Medical School. Dr. Chavarro’s research focuses on understanding how nutritional, lifestyle and metabolic factors influence human reproduction. The ultimate goal of this research is to identify modifiable lifestyle factors that may improve fertility in humans in order to estimate the burden of infertility attributable to modifiable factors, and, more importantly, to design and improve preventive interventions aimed at improving fertility and clinical interventions aimed at improving infertility treatment outcomes. In pursuit of this goal Dr. Chavarro has conducted a variety of studies among healthy individuals and among couples undergoing infertility treatment domestically and abroad. He is Principal Investigator of the Nurses’ Health Study 3, an ongoing prospective cohort study that follows more than 45,000 women. He also leads the nutritional component of the EARTH Study, an ongoing prospective cohort of couples undergoing infertility treatment at the Massachusetts General Hospital. His work has resulted in over 160 scientific publications in peer-reviewed journals. The American Society for Reproductive Medicine recognized Dr. Chavarro’s work in 2014 by awarding him the prestigious Ira and Ester Rosenwaks New Investigator Award. He has served as Chair of the Nutrition Special Interest Group and is currently Chair-Elect of the Environment and Reproduction Special Interest Group for this society. He is also an Editorial Board Member of Fertility and Sterility and Associate Editor of Human Reproduction.
