James O. Hill, PhD

Dr. James Hill is one of the world’s foremost experts in obesity and weight management. He is Anschutz Professor of Medicine and Pediatrics and Director of the Colorado Nutrition Obesity Research Center (NORC) at the University of Colorado. Dr. Hill served as President of the American Society for Medicine (ASN) in 2008-9. He was also President of The Obesity Society (TOS) in 1997-8. He was Chair of the first World Health Organization Consultation on Obesity in 1997. He was a member of the NIH Expert Panel on Obesity that developed first U.S guidelines for the treatment and prevention of obesity. Dr. Hill has published more than 600 scientific articles and book chapters. Many of these focus on the importance of healthy eating and physical activity in weight management and in preventing and managing type 2 diabetes. He has been continuously funded from NIH since 1981 and in 1998 received a prestigious MERIT Award from NIH. He is the recipient of several ASN awards, including the Centrum Center Science Award, the McCollum Award, and the David Kritchevsky Career Achievement Award in Nutrition. He has received the TOPS award and the George Bray Founder’s Award from the Obesity Society. He was the 2012 Atwater Lecturer for the US Department of Agriculture. He received the Joseph Sewall Award for Distinguished Service from the University of Colorado in 2014. Dr. Hill was elected to the National Academy of Medicine in 2014. Dr. Hill is a cofounder of the National Weight Control Registry, a registry of individuals who have been successful in maintenance of a reduced body weight. He has a passion for translating research to address public health issues. He is co-founder of America on the Move, a national weight gain prevention initiative that aims to inspire Americans to make small changes to prevent weight gain. He is the author of the Step Diet Book, published in June 2004 and the State of Slim published in August 2013.

John L. Sievenpiper, MD, PhD, FRCPC

Dr. Sievenpiper is a Clinician Scientist, who holds appointments as an Associate Professor in the Department of Nutritional Sciences and the Lifestyle Medicine Lead in the MD Program at the University of Toronto. He also holds appointments as a Staff Physician in the Division of Endocrinology & Metabolism and Scientist in the La Ka Shing Knowledge Institute at St. Michael’s Hospital. Dr. Sievenpiper completed his MSc, PhD and Postdoctoral Fellowship training in the Department of Nutritional Sciences at the University of Toronto. He completed his MD at St. Matthew’s University followed by Residency training in Medical Biochemistry at McMaster University leading to his certification as a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians of Canada (FRCPC). His research is focused on using randomized controlled trials and systematic reviews and meta-analyses to address questions of clinical and public health importance in relation to diet and chronic disease prevention. He currently holds a Diabetes Canada Clinician Scientist Award and Banting & Best Diabetes Centre Sun Life Financial New Investigator Award. He has authored more than 150 scientific papers and 13 book chapters. Dr. Sievenpiper is directly involved in knowledge translation with appointments to the nutrition guidelines’ committees of Diabetes Canada, European Association for the study of Diabetes (EASD), Canadian Cardiovascular Society (CCS), and the Canadian Obesity Network.

John C. Peters, PhD

John C. Peters, PhD, is Professor of Endocrinology and Metabolism at the University of Colorado, School of Medicine and Chief Strategy Officer of the Anschutz Health and Wellness Center. Dr. Peters is a researcher and strategist in nutrition, obesity, diabetes and related diseases. Prior to joining the Colorado faculty in 2011 he spent 26 years in research and development at the Procter & Gamble Company, where he conducted research, technology and product development programs in areas including nutrition, obesity, diabetes, and metabolism. Dr. Peters has published over 140 scientific articles and book chapters. He is co-founder and CEO of the America on the Move Foundation and is past President of the ILSI Center for Health Promotion. He has served on two Institute of Medicine committees on the prevention of childhood obesity.
