Caroline M. Apovian, M.D., FACP, FTOS, DABOM, is Professor of Medicine and Pediatrics, in the Section of Endocrinology, Diabetes, and Nutrition at Boston University School of Medicine, USA. She is also Director of the Center for Nutrition and Weight Management at Boston Medical Center, USA. Dr. Apovian is a nationally and internationally recognized authority on Nutrition and Obesity Medicine and has been in the field of Obesity and Nutrition for nearly three decades. Her current research interests are in: weight loss and its effects on endothelial cell function, obesity and cardiovascular disease, adipose cell metabolism and inflammation, resolution of diabetes and cardiovascular disease in the bariatric surgery population, disparities in the treatment of obesity in underserved populations and novel pharmacotherapeutic agents for the treatment of obesity. She is also an expert in research techniques for sampling subcutaneous adipose tissue and muscle biopsies, and has been studying the relationship between adipose tissue inflammation and obesity for over 10 years.

James O. Hill, PhD

Dr. James Hill is one of the world’s foremost experts in obesity and weight management. He is Anschutz Professor of Medicine and Pediatrics and Director of the Colorado Nutrition Obesity Research Center (NORC) at the University of Colorado. Dr. Hill served as President of the American Society for Medicine (ASN) in 2008-9. He was also President of The Obesity Society (TOS) in 1997-8. He was Chair of the first World Health Organization Consultation on Obesity in 1997. He was a member of the NIH Expert Panel on Obesity that developed first U.S guidelines for the treatment and prevention of obesity. Dr. Hill has published more than 600 scientific articles and book chapters. Many of these focus on the importance of healthy eating and physical activity in weight management and in preventing and managing type 2 diabetes. He has been continuously funded from NIH since 1981 and in 1998 received a prestigious MERIT Award from NIH. He is the recipient of several ASN awards, including the Centrum Center Science Award, the McCollum Award, and the David Kritchevsky Career Achievement Award in Nutrition. He has received the TOPS award and the George Bray Founder’s Award from the Obesity Society. He was the 2012 Atwater Lecturer for the US Department of Agriculture. He received the Joseph Sewall Award for Distinguished Service from the University of Colorado in 2014. Dr. Hill was elected to the National Academy of Medicine in 2014. Dr. Hill is a cofounder of the National Weight Control Registry, a registry of individuals who have been successful in maintenance of a reduced body weight. He has a passion for translating research to address public health issues. He is co-founder of America on the Move, a national weight gain prevention initiative that aims to inspire Americans to make small changes to prevent weight gain. He is the author of the Step Diet Book, published in June 2004 and the State of Slim published in August 2013.

Dr. Kevin Hall received his Ph.D. in Physics from McGill University and is now a tenured Senior Investigator at the National Institute of Diabetes & Digestive & Kidney Diseases (NIDDK), one of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) in Bethesda, MD. His main research interests are the regulation of food intake, macronutrient metabolism, energy balance, and body weight. Dr. Hall develops mathematical models and computer simulations to help design, predict, and interpret the results of clinical research studies conducted by his laboratory to better understand human nutrition and metabolism. Dr. Hall has twice received both the NIH Director’s Award and the NIDDK Director’s Award, and is the recipient of the E.V. McCullum Award from the American Society for Nutrition, the Lilly Scientific Achievement Award from The Obesity Society, the Guyton Award for Excellence in Integrative Physiology from the American Society of Physiology,and his award-winning Body Weight Planner ( has been used by millions of people to help predict how diet and physical activity dynamically interact to affect human body weight.

Dr. Eric Ravussin is a Boyd Professor at Louisiana State University. He received his PhD in human physiology at the University of Lausanne, Switzerland. Dr. Ravussin is an internationally recognized translational investigator in obesity and diabetes research. His research now focuses on the molecular basis of obesity and its co-morbidities. His studies are aimed at understanding the molecular mechanisms that determine the inter-individual variability in energy expenditure, fat oxidation and energy balance in response to caloric restriction, increased or decreased physical activity, overfeeding or physiological conditions such as puberty, pregnancy or menopause. His latest research is in the field of aging with an emphasis on the impact of caloric restriction on human biomarkers of aging and longevity. Dr. Ravussin He has published more than 500 peer reviewed manuscripts in the field of obesity, type 2 diabetes and aging. He has mentored more than 60 postdoctoral fellows.

Dr. Ravussin has been the recipient of multiple awards some of which include the 2001 “E.V. McCollum Award” for actively generating new concepts in nutrition and personally seeing to the execution of studies testing the validity of these concepts (American Society for Clinical Nutrition); the 2010 “Willendorf Award” presented by IASO for outstanding contributions to clinical research in obesity; the 2011 George Bray Founders Award recognizing “significant contributions that advanced the scientific or clinical basis for understanding or treating obesity” presented by TOS and the 2017 Friends of Albert (Mickey) Stunkard Life Achievement Award presented by TOS in remembrance of Dr. Albert (Mickey) Stunkard and recognizes people who have made a lifetime of outstanding contributions to the field of obesity in terms of scholarship, mentorship and education. He has been an active member of The Obesity Society, serving on the Council, the program committee and as a former President of the Society from 2006-2008. Dr. Ravussin is Editor in Chief of Obesity since 2012.

Dr. Frank Hu is Chair of Department of Nutrition, Fredrick J. Stare Professor of Nutrition and Epidemiology at Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health and Professor of Medicine, Harvard Medical School and Brigham and Women’s Hospital. He serves as Co-director of the Program in Obesity Epidemiology and Prevention at Harvard and Director of the Boston Nutrition and Obesity Research Center (BNORC) Epidemiology and Genetics Core. Dr. Hu received his MD from Tongji Medical College in China and a PhD in Epidemiology from University of Illinois at Chicago. His research is focused on nutritional and lifestyle epidemiology, prevention of obesity and cardiometabolic diseases, gene-environment interactions, and nutritional metabolomics. He has published >1000 papers (H-index 215) and a textbook on Obesity Epidemiology (Oxford University Press, 2008). In 2010, Dr. Hu received the American Diabetes Association Kelly West Award for Outstanding Achievement in Epidemiology. He has served on the Institute of Medicine (IOM) Committee on Preventing the Global Epidemic of Cardiovascular Disease, the AHA/ACC Obesity Guideline Expert Panel, and the 2015 Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committee, USDA/HHS. He currently serves on the editorial boards of Lancet Diabetes & Endocrinology, Diabetes Care, and Clinical Chemistry. Dr. Hu was elected to the U.S. National Academy of Medicine in 2015.
