The Science of Breastfeeding: An Update

Breastfeeding is now widely accepted as the normal and scientifically proven best start for human nutrition, but a vast number of scientific questions about the diversity of human milk composition, lactation biology and behaviour and functional pathways to benefits remain unanswered. Advances in understanding continue apace and new research priorities are being driven by emerging public health challenges such as rising rates of maternal obesity and preterm births, and also new tools such as genomics, big data techniques and intensive care technologies. This symposium brings together key leaders from a range of disciplines (nutrition science, epidemiology, anthropology to provide an update on advances and recent work to address previously neglected areas in breastfeeding and lactation science during the first 6 months of infant life. The focus is to draw together in a single state of the art symposium a range of conceptual, methodological and practice-oriented innovations in a format rendered accessible and of broad appeal to ASN attendees across many sub-specialties.

Meghan B. Azad, PhD

Dr. Meghan Azad holds a Canada Research Chair in Developmental Origins of Chronic Disease. She is an Assistant Professor of Pediatrics and Child Health at the University of Manitoba. Her research program (www.azadlab.ca) is focused on the role of infant nutrition and gut microbiota in the development of asthma, allergies and obesity. Dr. Azad co-leads the Manitoba site of the Canadian Healthy Infant Longitudinal Development (CHILD) Study (www.canadianchildstudy.ca), a national pregnancy cohort following 3500 children to understand how early life experiences shape lifelong health. She is directing multiple projects related to lactation and infant feeding practices in the CHILD cohort, including integrated studies linking human milk composition and gut microbiota with epigenetic profiles and clinical phenotypes. She also co-leads the Population Health Pillar for the Manitoba Developmental Origins of Chronic Disease Network (DEVOTION), and the Maternal, Fetal and Child Health Working Group for the new Canadian Urban Environmental Health Research Consortium (CANUE). Dr. Azad is an active member of the Breastfeeding Committee of Canada and the Winnipeg Breastfeeding Network, and she serves on the Executive Council for the International Society for Research in Human Milk and Lactation
