Mind the Gap: Opportunities to Address Nutrient Shortfalls

6/9/2018
6:00 AM - 7:45 AM

Location: 302

Sponsored By: Council for Responsible Nutrition

Getting all essential nutrients from food is preferred, but government data show that Americans are failing short of key nutrients. Nutrient insufficiency diminishes one’s health, wellness, and ability to avoid chronic disease over time. This program will highlight research identifying population groups that are more vulnerable to falling short of nutrient needs and potential approaches to ensure that nutritional adequacy is met. Recent data will be presented demonstrating that inadequate micronutrient intakes are more prevalent in low-income populations than in higher-income U.S. households. Research investigating the role of micronutrient supplementation in reducing the prevalence of inadequate nutrient intakes and decreased risk of nutrient deficiencies also will be discussed. From a macronutrient perspective, data illustrating the need for protein at levels beyond those currently recommended in older adults will be reviewed, along with approaches for protein supplementation to prevent age-related muscle mass loss.
