P12-005 - Anthropometric Status and Blood Pressure of Adults in Ahiazu Mbaise L.G.A. Imo State, Nigeria

The study was designed to assess the anthropometric status and blood pressure of adults in Ahiazu Mbaise L.G.A Imo State. A multistage random sampling technique was used to select a total of 300 adults aged 18-60 yrs from households of four communities in Ahiazu Mbaise local government area of Imo state Nigeria. Data were collected with the aid of a structured and pre-tested questionnaire, sphygmomanometer, stethoscope and anthropometric measurement, and the data were analyzed using descriptive (frequencies and percentage) and Chi-square test at significance level of (p<0.05). Result shows that 34.7% of the respondents were within the age 20-29 yrs, 76% were female,61.7%% were married, 38.3% had none education, 26% trader, 44.7% earns monthly income of less than ₦10,000, 18% skips meal, 32.3% of the meal skipped is lunch, 51% smokes cigarette, 39% smokes one sticks of cigarette per day, 53.3% and 13.3% had a systolic blood pressure on borderline and moderate hypertension while 36.7%, 23.3% and 9.3% had diastolic blood pressure on borderline, moderate and severe hypertension respectively, 28.3% , 43.3% and 8% were overweight, obese and underweight respectively, 42% were at risk of cardiovascular disease from their waist hip ratio classification. There is significance (P<0.05) relationship between anthropometric status and blood presure of the subjects. In conclusion, this study revealed a relationship between anthropometric status and blood pressure of adults in the study area, prevalence of overweight, obesity and underweight, hypertension owing to poor dietary habit, poor life style habit of the subjects
