P18-036 - Effect of Short Nutrition Education Program on Nutrient Intake in Lactating Women in Korea

Objective:
There is less information on the effect of nutrition education in lactating women in Korea. We evaluated the effect of short nutrition education program on nutrient intake in lactating women.

Study Design, Setting and Participants :
Seventy-five women at 2–4 months postpartum with 25–40 years old were recruited as part of a community-based residing in Daegu, and allocated to either the control and the education group. The education group received weekly nutrition education for a month. Anthropometry and demographic information were collected at baseline. And 24-h recall data were collected of both at baseline and after education in both group. Data were analyzed using SAS version 9.3 (SAS Institute, Inc.). Paired t-test was used. Significant differences were defined as p<0.05


Results:
In the present study, Lactating women were taking lower than 75% of Dietary reference intakes for Koreans (KDRIs) in vitamin A, vitamin C, vitamin B6, vitamin D, potassium, and magnesium. After nutrition education, vitamin A, vitamin C, vitamin B6, and potassium up to 84%–91% of KDRIs However, vitamin D and magnesium intake were very low (42.5%, 34.2% of KDRI).

Conclusions and Implications:
It is concluded that short nutrition education program is affected in nutrient intake in lactating women but more investigation is recommended to find to increase vitamin D and magnesium intake.
