P08-033 - Effects of Fenugreek Seeds on Oxidative stress, Pro-Inflammatory Cytokines And Nitrite as adjuncts to diet in patients with hyperlipidemia.

Monday, Jun 11
8:00 AM – 3:00 PM

ABSTRACT

Background. Fenugreek seeds are rich sources of fiber and  polyphenol antioxidants which are known for hypolipidemic and hypoglycemic effects and may inhibit athero-thrombosis due to its anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and nitric oxide (NO) activating effects.

Objectives. In the present trial, we examine the effects of fenugreek seeds on atherosclerotic risk factors; inflammation and nitrite deficiency.

Design and Setting. Randomized, double blind, placebo controlled trial in a hospital.

Subjects  and Methods. All subjects (n=61) with  hyperlipidemia were assigned to National Cholesterol Education Program (NCEP) step 1 diet for a period of 12 week and then randomized to two different test agents in identical sachets for another 12 weeks. The test agents were fenugreek seeds powder rich in polyphenols (60.0g/day) and cellulose placebo (3.0g/day). Of 61 subjects (Total cholesterol between 5.17 and 7.76nmol/1), 60 successfully completed 12 weeks of  NCEP  step I diet and then augmented the diet with one of the fiber or fenugreek supplement for additional 12 weeks

Results. Parameters of oxidative stress; malondialdehyde (MDA),thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS)and diene conjugates as well as pro-inflammatory cytokines; tumor necrosis factor (TNF)- α   and interleukin (IL)-6 showed significant decline from the baseline levels in the fenugreek  group whereas these changes were non-significant in the placebo group. The incremental differences from placebo for TNF- α (22.5%) and interleukin IL-6 (27.8%) were highly significant (P

Conclusions. Treatment with fenugreek seeds revealed significant anti-inflammatory

and nitric oxide activating effects, on NCEP step 1 diet effects.
