P13-140 - Age of introduction of complementary food and breastfeeding practices in Mexican toddlers 15-24 months differ according to sex and age-group.

Objective. To demonstrate differences of complementary feeding practices of Mexican children of low income families aged 15 to 24 months according to age strata and sex.

Methodology. In analytical cross-sectional study 211 apparently healthy children aged 15 to 24 months of age attending the outpatient clinic of pediatrics at the New Civil Hospital of Guadalajara were included. Feeding practices were evaluated using a questionnaire specially designed for the study which included complementary feeding and lactation variables. ANOVA, Student t test, Mann–Whitney U test and OR were obtained.

Results. From the total sample 34% female and 66% males. Mothers further prolonged breastfeeding in males, consequently the onset of formula feeding was further delayed. The introduction of cow's milk was earlier in children 15-18 months than in older children. The 15-18 age group showed a lower average lactation vs the 22-24 age group (P=0.001) and lower than the 19-21 age group (P=0.005). The age of onset of human milk substitutes (HMS) was significantly lower in the 15-18 age group than in the 19-21 age group (P=0.023) and the 22-24 age group (P=0.025). The duration of HMS was lower in the 15-18 months group than in the 19-21 (P=0.018) and 22-24 age group (p=0.008). The age of HMS suspension was lower in toddlers 15-18 vs 19-21 age groups (P=0.004) and 15-18 vs 22-24 age groups (P=0.011). The age of onset of cow's milk consumption was lower in the 15-18 age group vs 19-21 age group (p=0.003) and 15-18 vs 22-24 age group (P=0.021). The onset of HMS was 89% higher in females than males [OR= 1.89 (95% CI 1.03, 3.47), P=0.038]. Toddlers in the 15-18 age group were 2.6 times more likely to start HMS before six months than toddlers in the 22-24 age group and 75% more likely to receive HMS than toddlers in the 19-21 age group. There was a two-fold greater probability of early onset of HMS in 15-18 vs > 18 age group.

Conclusion. There are significantly differences in the age of introduction of complementary food and breastfeeding practices in Mexican toddlers from 15 to 24 months according to sex and quarterly age group. It is interesting to observe how dynamic feeding practices changes are, even in this short interval of age in families of low socioeconomic status of Guadalajara, Mexico.
