P01-109 - Association between inflammatory markers and dietary inflammatory index (DII) in diabetes patients

Objectives : Chronic Inflammation reaction has been reported to affect the pathogenesis and progression of diabetes. Inflammatory markers, such as high sensitive C-reactive protein (hs-CRP) and interleukin-6 (IL-6) are elevated in patients with diabetes compared with normal person. There are a few researches to find out the relationship between blood inflammation markers and dietary intakes. Dietary inflammatory index (DII) has been developed for measuring the levels of inflammatory status in diet. Therefore, the aim of study was to analyze the relationship between blood inflammatory markers and DII in diabetes patients.

Methods: The subjects of this study were 107 diabetes patients (65 males (60.7%)). Measurement factors included body weight, % body fat, body mass index(BMI), fasting plasma glucose, insulin levels, lipid profiles and inflammatory markers. DIIs were calculated with 24 hr dietary recall data. The data were analyzed with SPSS v. 23.0.

Results: The age of the subjects was 60.3 ± 10.4 years, BMI was 26.0 ± 3.3 kg/m2, and DII was -0.02 ± 2.602 (median: -0.150). The correlation between DII and hs-CRP showed a positive correlation (r=0.257, p<0.008). The result of linear regression analysis showed that DII was related with hs-CRP (r²=0.074, β=0.243, p<0.023) significantly after adjusting for age, BMI, Metabolic Equivalent of Task(MET).
Conclusions : This study showed that hs-CRP associated with DII in diabetic patients. These findings suggest that DII might be used to surrgated marker of inflammatory status in diabetes patients.
