Moringa Oleifera Lam.(MO), is recognized as a abundant source of phytochemicals and reported multiple biological effects such as antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antidiabetic, anticancer. Among parts of MO, especially leaves of MO contain lots of phenolic and flavonoids compounds and its water or ethanol extraction used to utilize these compounds. In this study, we investigated whether different extraction method will affect anti-oxidative activity and phytochemical compounds of ethanol extract from the leaves of MO.
Dried powdered MO leaves samples were divided 4 groups by different extraction methods; raw group that have no treatment(R), water extraction group(W), stirred ethanol extraction group(ES), refluxed ethanol extraction group(ER). For the analysis, we extracted 4 samples in methanol solution. The DPPH and ABTS radical scavenging activity was assessed by each 1mM DPPH methanol solution, 2.5mM ABTS solution that used immediately before experiment. Total phenolic compounds content was calculated on gallic acid standard curve and total flavonoid content was based on quercetin standard curve.
The DPPH radical scavenging activity was the highest in W(89.06%) and lowest in ES(28.98%) among sample groups but all groups were significantly lower than ascorbic acid(92.20%). The ABTS radical scavenging activity of R(94.12%) and W(94.32%) was higher than ER(93.51%). The total phenolic compounds were 62.4mg GAE/100g(R), 126.27mg GAE/100g(W), 265.20mg GAE/100g(ES), and 286.80mg GAE/g(ER). The total flavonoid compounds were 266.0mg QE/100g(R), 360.0mg QE/100g(W), 1546.67mg QE/100g(ES) and 1353.33mg QE/100g(ER).
Our results suggest that antioxidant abilities, phenolic and flavonoid compounds of MO extracts were affected by different extract solvent and methods.
