NAGC/CAEP Teacher Preparation Standards are designed to prepare teachers of the gifted to engage in best practices that promote equity. It can be challenging to craft tools to provide defensible evidence these future gifted educators have the necessary knowledge and skills. This session opens collaborative conversations for gifted teacher preparation faculty to discuss teacher proficiencies in gifted education.

Christine J. Briggs, Ph.D., is an Associate Professor in Curriculum and Instruction and the Director for the Center for Gifted Education at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette. She teaches gifted education, research design, instructional coaching, and capstone courses to master's students. Her professional contributions include publications in Gifted Child Quarterly, Urban Education, and Gifted Child Today; and serving as co-chair of the NAGC Curriculum Award and a member of the NAGC Education committee.
She facilitates Master's Candidates' completion of their Capstone Projects as a culminating activity to earn an M.Ed. in Gifted education. For the past 10 years, candidates have identified a problem/concern in their teaching area that reflects content and skills learned within the M.Ed. program, complete a research proposal, with IRB approval, and conduct their study, and report their findings. She has facilitated all of the projects for this program since 2006. Three recent graduates of the program presented their studies at both MSERA and AERA.
Christine continues to advocate for students of diversity and poverty to gain access to challenging and rigorous instruction to find their gifts and talents.
