In this workshop, participants apply their knowledge of the federal regulations and collaborate with colleagues on a series of complex case studies. Experiment with structured processes of connecting the facts to the regulations and then presenting decisions to a panel of stakeholders. Active participation is required.

Steve Springer

Director, Regulatory Practice Liaison
NAFSA

Steve Springer is Director of Regulatory Practice Liaison for NAFSA: Association of International Educators and manages NAFSA’s engagement with federal agencies concerning regulatory practice issues, among other duties. Prior to joining the NAFSA staff he worked as an immigration attorney, representing higher education institutions and their faculty, staff, and students, and worked in-house managing immigration services for several major research universities. He is active in the American Immigration Lawyers Association (AILA), has served on its USCIS Transformation Committee and currently serves on its Students and Scholars Committee. He earned a law degree, a graduate degree in cultural studies, and served as a Peace Corps volunteer in Poland.

Linda L. Melville, MIA, MA

Director, International Student and Scholar Services
University of New Mexico-Main Campus

Linda Melville is currently the Director of International Student and Scholar Services at the University of New Mexico. Linda previously worked in International Education Administration at both Carnegie Mellon University and Carlow College in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. She was a Peace Corps Teacher Trainer in Libreville, Gabon and taught ESL in the US, China, and France. Linda received a Master’s in International Administration from the School for International Training and a Master’s in Linguistics/TESOL from California State University, San Jose. A NAFSA leader and Trainer Corps member for more than 20 years, she has served in many NAFSA roles and has been a frequent presenter of sessions and workshops at regional and national conferences since 1995 on a variety of topics affecting the field of International Education. Jenny Bowen

Associate Director
Indiana University-Bloomington Office of International Services

Jenny Bowen has been involved in international student advising for more than 22 years at Indiana University, and currently services as the Associate Director, Student Services. She has her undergraduate and graduate degrees from indiana University, and studied abroad during both programs. She has been active in a variety of NAFSA roles at the national and regional level for more than 18 years.

Patricia Bello, MPA

Assistant Provost for International Education and Global Affairs
Binghamton University SUNY

Patricia Bello serves as the Assistant Provost for International Education and Global Affairs, as well as the Director for International Student and Scholar Services at Binghamton University, State University of New York. She has been in the field of international education since 2001, holding positions at Syracuse University, the College of William and Mary, and The University of Texas at Austin prior to accepting the position at Binghamton University. She earned her BA in political science at Le Moyne College, and went on to earn her MA in public administration from the Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs at Syracuse University. Bello is an active member of the NAFSA Trainer Corps, and has led multiple workshops on a variety of topics at state, regional, and annual NAFSA conferences.
