Michele Arellano

Associate Director
University of Kansas

Michele Arellano has worked in Higher Education Administration since 1999 and more specifically in Education Abroad since 2002. She currently serves as the Associate Director-Student Services of the Office of Study Abroad at The University of Kansas. Her main responsibilities are managing all student services functions including enrollment management, scholarship and financial aid processing and advising for study abroad. Previously, Michele was employed by the Financial Aid office at the University of Kansas and currently serves as study abroad liaison and main advisor to the Financial Aid office, Registrar’s office and Enrollment Management office on campus. She presents often on financing education abroad topics and has served on numerous internal as well as external scholarship review committees. As a member of NAFSA's leadership team, she currently serves as Chair-Elect of NAFSA's Education Abroad Regulatory Practice (EARP) committee and was the former Chair of the EARP Financial Aid Subcommittee.

Matthew C. Sagayaga, Jr.

Financial Aid Counselor

Matthew Sagayaga Jr. is the financial aid study abroad coordinator at Portland State University, Office of Financial Aid and Scholarships. Matthew has a BS in Ethnic Studies, African/ Asian, Pacific Islander American issues from Oregon State University, a BS in Communications from Portland State University, and a Masters in Postsecondary Adult & Continuing Education, in Student Services from Portland State University. Matthew serves on the NAFSA EARP Fin. Aid Subcommittee and is committed to the ongoing collaboration between study abroad offices and the
financial aid department.

Jonathan Groves Sylvia, M.A. - Globalization

Assistant Director, Operations
Dartmouth College

Jonathan Sylvia is the Assistant Director, Operations at the Frank J. Guarini Institute for International Education at Dartmouth College. He serves NAFSA on Region XI's Leadership Team as Teasurer, past New Hampshire's State Representative, member of the nominations committee, workshop coordinator, mentor, conference presenter, and Advocacy Day participant. Also a member of NAFSA's EA KC Financing Education Abroad Subcommittee. He served as President of the board of directors for Hartford Dismas House and is now Treasurer of Dismas of Vermont, Inc., which promotes healthy transitional living environments for those re-entering society from prison. Jonathan also participates with PAX Academic Exchange as Youth Exchange and Study (YES) cluster leader and coordinator. With twenty-five years experience in higher education, Jonathan cooperates with global faculty and administrators to enhance program offerings and services to Dartmouth's student-body and diligently promotes global awareness and intercultural understanding to those he serves. Jonathan values connecting people from different cultures to promote understanding and friendship.
