Senior international officers (SIO) play a vital role in the leadership of campus internationalization (IZN). Designed for SIOs and IZN leaders who are new to their positions, this workshop provides an overview of the roles, responsibilities, and opportunities within these positions. Strategies for success and overcoming challenges are shared and discussed.

Learning Objectives:

Eva Anneli Adams, PhD

Eva Anneli Adams leads international education at California State University in San Bernardino. With decades of international education leadership, Adams career includes leading program and organizational development, teaching full-time and part-time, and she served the Department of State at the U.S. Embassy in Finland for 20 years. She has served on national boards on international education, the Board of Directors of the North American Council for Staff, Program, and Organizational Development and the Board of Directors of the World Affairs Council of Las Vegas. She holds a Master’s Degree in Adult Education and Ph.D. in higher education leadership. Adams has published on sociology of leadership.

Joel A. Gallegos

Assistant Provost for International Programs
University of North Carolina-Charlotte Office of International Programs

Joël A. Gallegos is assistant provost for international programs at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte (UNC Charlotte) where he overseas campus wide internationalization efforts including education abroad, international students and scholars, English language training, global engagement, intercultural outreach and on campus internationalization. Previously, he served as director of education abroad at UNC Charlotte and as director of study abroad at the University of Toledo.

Gallegos, who was chair of NAFSA's 2014 Annual Conference in San Diego also serves on their board of directors while chairing the institutional advancement committee. He also currently serves on the board of directors of the Fund for Education Abroad (FEA) and the World Affairs Council of Charlotte where he chairs the education committee. He served as a member of the Council on International Educational Exchange (CIEE) board of directors and as chair of CIEE's Academic Consortium Board from 2012-2014. From 2007-2012, Gallegos served as chair of UNC System's University Council on International Programs and chair of the UNC Exchange Program advisory board. Gallegos was the 2008 recipient of NAFSA's Lilly von Klemperer award.

Susan Bender

Senior Director of Global Affairs for the Office of Global Engagement

Susie Bender is the Senior Director of Global Affairs at the University of California, Irvine. Bender has worked in international education for over three decades - developing campus infrastructure for internationalization, training staff and colleagues, and presenting widely at professional conferences on. With expertise in managing and supporting international student and scholar services, international student recruitment, study abroad, intensive English language programs, institutional partnership agreements, internationalizing university curricula, and risk management issues, Bender has a broad vision for comprehensive internationalization. She currently serves as chair of AIEA’s Strategic Issues Committee and co-authored and an Issue Brief titled, “Moving to the Center: Five Strategies for Strengthening Institutional Commitment to Global Initiatives.”
