Develop an understanding of J-1 advising and regulatory issues including eligibility, DS-2019 issuance, health insurance, maintenance of status, extension, transfer, 212(e), repeat participation, and employment. SEVIS is discussed in relation to advising practices and procedures.

Ximena Corley is a Senior Scholar Advisor at Columbia University, ISSO Faculty and Scholar. She works in a large office that serves over 2,000 J-1 scholars a year. She also has experience working with F-1 students. She has been working in the field of international education for 10 years. She previously worked at IIE and Rutgers University- New Brunswick. She has a MA in International Affairs from The New School.

Sheena Maria Connell

Assistant Director/ ISSS

Sheena has been involved with the development of IE at public and private U.S. universities, IEPs, and secondary schools. She has more than 10 years of combined experience in SEVP regulations and policy, SEVIS functionality, IEM, recruitment initiatives, cross-cultural training, university-community partnerships, programming, and NAFSA mentoring. As an active NAFSA National Team member and former Academy Coach, she has presented at NAFSA Annual, Regional and Bi-Regional conferences. As a mentor, Connell stives to be a partner in facilitating new IE professionals' growth as they explore, uncover resources, and forge a bold and informed professional life in international education.

Courtney Beardmore

Senior International Student and Scholar Advisor
Colorado State University Office of International Programs

Courtney Beardmore is the Senior International Student and Scholar Advisor at Colorado State University in Fort Collins, CO. Her primary focus is on advising, orientation/programming, and creating immigration documents for J-1 exchange visitors. She also advises F-1 students and H-1B employees. Courtney previously worked in international student programs at Wartburg College, served in the Peace Corps in the Kyrgyz Republic and taught English in Japan. She holds a masters degree in international education from SIT Graduate Institute.

Carissa McCarthy

International Student Adviser
Rutgers University-New Brunswick Center for Global Services

Carissa McCarthy joined Rutgers University’s Center for Global Services as an International Student Adviser at in 2006. During her time at Rutgers, she has worked extensively with F-1 and J-1 students. In addition, she worked in cross-cultural programming and ways to support the integration between international students and domestic students/community members. More recently, she has taken a new role in advising Short-Term and Non-degree students. This role has given her the opportunity to learn about the J-1 student intern category and the regulations for the F-1 non-degree students. Carissa studied abroad in Florence, Italy and upon returning, decided to pursue a career in International Education. She graduated with a Master's degree in Intercultural Communication from the University of Pennsylvania and enjoys traveling to new places with her husband and young daughter.
