Examine challenges facing international students and scholars. Explore options, develop strategies, make connections, and build adaptive advising skills. Through practice and practical exploration, participants return to their work setting with new ideas to connect, collaborate, and expand their work. This workshop is intended for those with less than five years in the field.

Elke Breker is the Director of the Office of International Student & Scholar Services (OISSS) at Brown University. For the past 20+ years she worked in the field of international education at universities in California, Colorado, Texas and Germany. She holds a degree in adult education and psychology from the Technical University of Aachen (RWTH Aachen), a post-graduate certificate in Teaching German as a Foreign Language from the University of Trier (Universität Trier) and a Master of Education in Counseling & Student Services from the University of North Texas. Her involvement with the Association for International Educators (NAFSA) includes appointments as presenter and trainer on regulatory as well as intercultural communication topics. In addition to her ongoing affiliation with the NAFSA Trainer Corps, she is presently a regional team member on the Government Regulatory Advisory Committee (GRAC).

Kevin Long is Lead Student Advisor and J-1 Scholar advisor at University of California, San Francisco. He has a Master of Arts in Teaching from School of International Training and has over 20 years experience in international education, including 8 years living and teaching abroad in three countries. He also has extensive knowledge and experience in the field of mentoring, both as mentor and mentee. He has served as a coach in the NAFSA Academy, and is always engaged in mentoring one or more educators new to the field of international education. He worked as an international student/scholar advisor at Rhode Island School of Design, Dominican University, and UC Berkeley prior to UCSF.

Lisa Kosiewicz Doran

Lisa Kosiewicz Doran currently serves as the International Student Specialist in the Office of International Programs at Colorado College, a small, private, liberal arts institution which currently hosts approximately 230 international students and exchange visitors each year. Prior to relocating from California to Colorado with her family, she held a variety of positions in the area of international student and scholar services at several San Francisco Bay Area institutions, including serving as: the Director of the International Student and Scholar Services office at the University of San Francisco, the SEVIS Coordinator for the University of California-Berkeley’s Services for International Students and Scholars office, the International Student Advisor for U.C. Berkeley Extension's English Language Program, and the Admissions/Student Services Coordinator for the English Center for International Women at Mills College.

Lisa has enjoyed working in the field of international education for over 26 years and she appreciates opportunities to help others develop their knowledge and skills in the area of international student and scholar advising. She has been an active NAFSA member and has served in several leadership roles within NAFSA Region XII and the Region XII Northern District. Lisa has also been a presenter at local, regional and national NAFSA conferences and she is currently a member of the NAFSA Trainer Corps. Lisa previously helped co-write the curriculum, and has served as the Workshop Dean, for NAFSA's “F-1 Student Advising for Beginners” workshop. She holds an M.A. degree in International and Multicultural Education from the University of San Francisco.

Samantha Lu

Samantha Lu is the Director of the Office of International Services at Teachers College, Columbia University. She has been working in the field of international education for more than 17 years. She is an active member of NAFSA: Association of International Educators, serving in many roles both at regional and national levels. Samantha was an NAFSA Academy mentor. She is also the lead trainer for NAFSA certification educational programs. She has presented and facilitated numerous sessions and workshops at the AIEA and NAFSA. She served on the Annual Conference Planning committee and is the Past-Chair for the International Student and Scholar Services Knowledge Community (KCISSS). She has served as the Region X and Bi-region Conference Chair and is a NAFSA Trainer Crops and is currently the Region X Chair. In addition to NAFSA, she also serves as a NAFSA United Nations rep. and is currently serving on the UN/DPI NGO Executive Committee.
