Intended for professionals at U.S.-based institutions who work with international recruitment.

Shelby L. Cearley

Director/DSO
Texas Tech University

Shelby Cearley currently serves as Director of Graduate Admissions and DSO for the
Office of Graduate Admissions at Texas Tech University. She is also the IEM and admissions
liaison for NAFSA Region III and a member of NAFSA’s Trainer Corps. A graduate of the
NAFSA Academy for International Education (Cohort IV), Cearley has presented several
admissions-related sessions at state, regional, and national conferences and was chosen as a
delegate for the 2007 Baden-Württemberg Seminar in Stuttgart, Germany. She is a member of
the Texas International Education Specialists and the Association of Metroplex International
Educators.

Lily Swan, M. Ed

Director of International Student and Scholar Services
University of St. Thomas

Lily Swan is the Director of International Student and Scholar Services at the University of St. Thomas (UST). Originally from the great state of Michigan, she earned a B.S from Eastern Michigan University and her M. Ed from the University of Nevada-Las Vegas (UNLV).

At the start of her career in higher ed, she had hopes of pursuing a career in First-Year programming. However, she fell into International Education. She earned a Graduate Assistantship in the International Student and Scholar Services department at UNLV, prompting her career.

Afterward, she was the Senior International Student Advisor at the University of Houston-Clear Lake for five years. She worked extensively with international admissions and advising.

At UST, she serves as the PDSO/RO. She is an active member of the NAFSA, is a member of Trainer Corps and has served on the training teams for pre-conference workshops at the regional and national levels.

Aimee E. Thostenson

Director of International Student Recruitment
University of Minnesota-Twin Cities

Aimee Thostenson is currently the Director of International Student Recruitment at the University of Minnesota Twin Cities and the past Associate Director of International Admission at St. Catherine University. She has presented on hot topics in international admission, small group international recruitment, cost-effective recruitment strategies, financial aid for international students, F-1 immigration regulations for international admissions professionals and on women’s colleges and universities. Aimee has served on the NAFSA national RAP (now IEM) team as the Admissions & Credential Coordinator and Network Leader. She served on the editorial board of the NAFSA wRAP Up Newsletter as the copy editor. Aimee is also a past chair of Study Minnesota. Aimee earned her MA in comparative & international development education from the University of Minnesota Twin Cities and her bachelor's degree in anthropology at Macalester College.
