Filing academic H-1B petitions requires coordination among the prospective employee, the hiring department, and government agencies. Participants prepare a sample H-1B petition and gather and examine sources of information, reference sources of authority, determine the wage, prepare forms for submission, and build an inspection file.

Tammi Johnson, Director of International Student, Scholar and Faculty Services, University of Idaho. Tammi is the PDSO/RO at the University of Idaho, is a NAFSA Trainer Corps Member and also serves on the University’s International Engagement Advisory Council. She presents often at Regional & National NAFSA conferences on different topics dealing with student/scholar/faculty services and had been Lead Trainer and Co-trainer of F-1, J-1 , and H1B CEP Workshops. Tammi has been in the International Education field for over 17 years, of which 15 have been spent in an advising and supervising capacity. Those advised are F-1 Students, J-1 students and scholars, H1B’s, TN's, O-1's. Tammi has 12 years experience in working closely with outside legal counsel on Lawful Permanent Residency and O-1 cases for International Faculty and staff as well as other immigration issues. Tammi enjoys camping, fishing, hunting, gardening, attending and coaching/leading sports activities, and 4-H with her husband and two young sons. In her spare time she likes to read and make jewelry. Gwyneth A. Smith

Gwyneth A. Smith, Associate Director of the International Students and Scholars Office at Columbia University Medical Center, has been working in the field of International Education and has been a NAFSA member since 2003. Gwyneth has extensive experience advising F-1 and J-1 students, international faculty and staff including J-1 scholars and H-1B visa holders. In 2013 and 2014, Gwyneth was Region X's Regulatory Ombudsman for Student Issues and in 2015 was Region X's Regulatory Ombudsman for Scholar Issues. Since 2016, Gwyneth has been on the Region X Chair-stream and is currently Past Chair. Gwyneth has presented at numerous NAFSA conferences and is a member of NAFSA’s Trainer Corps. Gwyneth also served as Instructional Designer and Content Editor for the NAFSA 'J-1 Advising for Beginners' training manual. Prior to her current role, Gwyneth worked and studied overseas in Japan and then Europe where she received her M.A. in International Relations at the Brussels School of International Studies through the University of Kent at Canterbury, England. In 2009, she received her Ed.M. in International Educational Policy at Teachers College, Columbia University.

Ugo Buzzi is a Faculty & Staff Immigration Adviser at the University of Michigan International Center in Ann Arbor, Michigan. He advises on H-1B, TN, E-3, Permanent Residency and general employment-based immigration issues. Prior to joining the International Center, he served in the Criminal Appeals Division and Narcotics Prosecutions Bureau of the Cook County State's Attorney's Office in Chicago, Illinois, and has also practiced law in the area of commercial litigation. Ugo attended graduate school at the University of Michigan prior to attending law school at Michigan State University College of Law. He is a member of the State Bar of Michigan and Illinois Bar, and a member of NAFSA and the American Immigration Lawyers Association (AILA).

Sheri Beyer

Sheri Beyer is an Immigration Paralegal with Ware|Immigration in Metairie, LA where she handles family and employment-based permanent residence matters, J-1 waivers, naturalization, and E-2 investor visas. Beyer is a frequent presenter and trainer for NAFSA sessions and workshops pertaining to KC ISSS, served as the Region VII Coach for the NAFSA Academy 9, and KC ISSS representative for Region XII. Sheri is working on her Ph.D. in Education Administration at the University of New Orleans. She received her M.Ed in Higher Educational Leadership from the University of Nevada-Las Vegas and her BA in International Studies from Hawai'i Pacific University.
