J-1 Advising: Intermediate - (WS27)

Address topics such as eligibility, the bars, pre-arrival and orientation, 212(e), employment, issues around transitions, and working with dependents. Focus on the most common J categories in higher education. Basic procedural training, the trainee category, or foreign medical graduates are not covered. Participants should have working knowledge and understanding of immigration and J-1 visa regulations and procedures.

Dr. Ling Gao LeBeau is Director of International Programs and Services at Western Carolina University (WCU). She provides strategic vision, leadership, advocacy, and expertise on international education and services at WCU. She leads and implements campus-wide internationalization initiatives and oversees various areas. Before WCU, Ling was an international educator at Indiana University. Ling is active in AIEA, NAFSA, and IIE, and frequently presents on issues of international higher education. She serves on NAFSA Trainer Corps for workshops on International Education Research and J-1 Advising. Ling was a mentor to Myanmar higher education professionals through IIE Connecting to the World Project. She also served on AIEA conference committee. Ling holds a PhD in Higher Education and MS in Language Education from Indiana University Bloomington. Ling’s research interests include: global learning, curriculum internationalization, international partnerships, assessment, and mobility.

Dacia L. Gauer

Dacia Gauer is Senior Associate Director of the Office of International Services at Johns Hopkins University. She has been in the field of international education for over 10 years, primarily as an international student and scholar advisor. In her current position, Dacia advises F and J students and H-1B employees. Her interest in international education began after college when she took a job teaching ESL to primary school students in Thailand. Dacia has a B.A. in History from Loyola University in Maryland and an M.A. in International Education from the SIT Graduate Institute.

Elena Gruzdeva

Elena was born and raised in Russia where she received a B.A./M.A. in Foreign Language and Literature (English) and taught English as a Second Language. She first came to the U.S. in 1993 as a J-1 exchange student and then in 1995 as an F-1 international student. She holds an M.S. in Information Science from Indiana University. Elena started her career in the field of international education at the end of 2003 at Louisiana State University, in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, as an International Student Advisor and then Assistant Director of the International Services Office. She later worked as an International Student and Scholar Advisor at the University of Michigan, in Ann Arbor, Michigan, and at Northeastern University, in Boston, Massachusetts, as an Associate Director of the Global Services Office, advising both F-1 and J-1 students and scholars.She currently works as an Associate Director for Foreign Student and Scholar Services at the Office of International Education at Carnegie Mellon University.
