Learn how to handle the most common requests made of new U.S. Designated School Officials (DSOs). Topics covered include issuing I-20s, maintaining status, employment, practical training, travel and reentry, and program extensions. SEVIS is discussed in relation to international student advising practices and procedures.

Stephanie A. Otte

Ms. Otte is an International student/scholar advisor at the Rutgers University. Ms. Otte earned her BS in Accounting from Berkeley College. She is responsible for advising F-1 students and J-1 EV in all matters. She has been an active member of NAFSA since 2013 and was a recipient of 2014 NAFSA’s Advocacy Travel Grant. Ms. Otte has co-moderated the F-1 Intermediate Workshop at the regional level in 2015 and 2017 and F-1 Beginners Workshop in 2016 and 2017. In addition to being avid advocate for the International community, Ms. Otte is the mother of two beautiful children, and is a diehard fan of the Walking Dead.

Sarah Wambe, MA Higher Ed Admin

Director of Admissions
Concord University

Sarah Wambe was born and raised in San Francisco, and completed her undergraduate degree at California State University, Long Beach. After graduation she moved to London, where she interned at an accounting firm and had the opportunity to travel extensively in Europe. Sarah returned to the Los Angeles area in 2006 and has been working in education ever since. In 2014 she relocated to West Virginia to develop and grow the both the domestic and international enrollment at Concord University. Sarah graduated with her Masters in Higher Education Administartion from West Virginia University in 2017. She currently serves as a member of NAFSA Trainer Corps. Her current position is Director of Admissions at Concord University in Athens, West Virginia where she supervises domestic staff, recruits international students and serves as DSO. In her spare time Sarah enjoys volunteering with the Junior Leauge of the Roanoke Valley.

Jill A. Munro, M.A.

Director of International Student and Scholar Services
The College of Wooster

Jill Munro has worked in Student Development for over 25 years. In 2011 she became the Director of International Student and Scholar Services at the College of Wooster working with international students, faculty and staff, coordinating the Friends of International Student (FIS) program, teaching a Global Engagement Seminar (GES) and working two 1/2 days in International Admissions. JIll is now the Director of International Student Services in the Center for Diversity (CDI) and Inclusion at Wooster. She continues to work with the international population on campus, while collaborating with the other branches of the CDI. She is PDSO, teaches a Global Engagement Seminar (GES) and supervises the Assistant Dircetor as they work together to instill best practices in ISS at the College of Wooster.

John Gradel, MA

Assistant Director, Institute for International Studies
Lock Haven University

John Gradel is an Assistant Director of the Institute for International Studies and International Admissions at Lock Haven University, where he serves as a Designated School Official and Alternate Responsible Officer. He received his bachelor’s in Social Studies Adolescence Education and History from the State University of New York at Fredonia. Mr. Gradel received master’s in College Student Personnel from Bowling Green State University and is currently pursuing his doctorate degree in Administration and Leadership Studies at Indiana University of Pennsylvania. He has presented on a wide-range of topics in international education from working with study abroad students to international students. Most recently he has presented at the Region VII conference with presentations titled, Improving Mental Health Awareness Among International Students and To Orientation-finity and Beyond! This past fall, he was the Lead Presenter for F-1 Beginners Workshop at the Region VII conference.

Alexis Andrea Cano

Senior International Student Advisor II
Texas A&M University-Kingsville

Alexis Cano was born and raised in South Texas and works as a Senior International Student Advisor II with Texas A&M University-Kingsville. She earned her Bachelors of Science Degree in Psychology from the University of Phoenix and is currently enrolled in the Master’s Program for Mental Health Clinical Counseling with Texas A&M University-Kingsville.

Alexis has 8 of years of experience advising F-1 and J-1 international students and scholars, and has adapted to an ever changing student body and organizational changes. She is currently a member of the NAFSA Trainer Corps and presented a session at the 2017 NAFSA Region III Conference titled, “Overcoming Compassion Fatigue.”

Alexis’ personal interests include meditation, walking, road trips, spending time with her husband and 3 boys, and spoiling her pets.
