This session will provide an overview of how a small local health department adopted the Core Competencies for Public Health Professionals to build a more competent public health workforce. The session will highlight the competencies that were most improved, review strategies utilized, and discuss future strategies to continue building a highly skilled and engaged workforce.

Katrina Harwood, MS, RD, LD, CLC is currently the Director of Maternal and Child Health and Accreditation Coordinator with Marion Public Health in Marion, Ohio. Katrina has been with Marion Public Health for five years and was previously a Dietitian with the Siouxland District Health Department in Sioux City, Iowa. She holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Dietetics from Idaho State University, a Master of Science degree in Nutrition and Health Science from University of Nebraska-Lincoln, and will be graduating with a Master’s in Public Health with a concentration in Health Policy and Management from Kent State University in August 2018. Katrina has a keen interest in building individual and organizational capacity to address public health needs within her community and has taken a lead role in advancing accreditation efforts in her health department though workforce development, quality improvement, and performance management.
