D1 - Enhancing Staff Understanding and Buy-in of Public Health Core Competencies

When creating data-based workforce development plans, it is important to have participation from staff at all levels. Agency leadership wants to have as valid and complete a data set as possible and get buy-in from staff during assessment and planning processes. To address concerns about participation and understanding of Core Competencies for Public Health Professionals, Michigan Public Health Institute worked with nine Michigan local health departments and the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services to develop a training to introduce the Core Competencies. The training included concepts for staff at all levels and evaluated this training to assess change in knowledge. This session will describe the training and evaluation results, as well as preliminary effects on staff participation rates.

Jessie B. Jones, MPA, ASQ-CQIA

Jessie Jones, MPA, ASQ-CQIA, is Program Coordinator for the Office of Accreditation and Quality Improvement for the Center for Health Communities within MPHI. In this role, Ms. Jones provides program area and project oversight, and designs and facilitates trainings on quality improvement and related topics to public health practitioners. Ms. Jones has facilitated group processes at the state and local levels with a variety of public health audiences in Michigan. Ms. Jones is a Certified Quality Improvement Associate through the American Society of Quality and served as one of the authors of the second edition of Embracing Quality in Public Health: A Practitioner’s Quality Improvement Guidebook. Ms. Jones received her Master’s Degree in Public Administration from Michigan State University and is a trained Technology of Participation (ToP) facilitator.

Public Health Improvement Specialist

Jeanette Ball, MS, is a Public Health Improvement Specialist for the Center for Healthy Communities at MPHI. Ms. Ball currently provides evaluation training and support, quality improvement training, and technical assistance across a variety of tribal projects including the OMH Colon Cancer QI Learning Collaborative and Evaluation, the Upper Peninsula Tribal Breast Health project, and the REACH Journey to Wellness project. She also supports tribal and local health departments on accreditation activities, such as strategic planning, workforce development, performance management, and quality improvement, for state and national accreditation. Ms. Ball is a trained Technology of Participation (ToP) methods facilitator, a ToP Strategic Planning facilitator, and has participated in Mobilizing for Action through Planning and Partnership (MAPP) training. Ms. Ball received her Masters of Science in Applied Sociology from Clemson University.
