Body-Oriented Approaches for Children and Adolescents

Sunday, March 25
10:30 AM - 12:00 PM
Location: Wilson

Talking can sometimes be impossible for traumatised children, especially during the phase of trauma processing. In these instances non-verbal techniques like playing or drawing can become a useful alternative. In severe cases where children are so traumatised and dissociative that they are unable to play, talk or draw, it appears that accessing the trauma through a body oriented mode can be highly successful.
This training will explore at the hand of a case study how the body-oriented approach became the key to unlock the trauma and dissociation of a child. The use of ‘beseelbare’ objects and movement enabled the child to identify a very young dissociative state and finally the unspeakable trauma. It also enabled the child to start to talk about the trauma in a monosyllabic way followed by more substantial disclosures and significant change in behaviour.
