Somatization and Interpersonal Sensitivity Among Mothers of Children with Masturbatory Behavior: Childhood Trauma and Body Mentalization

Monday, March 26
11:10 AM - 11:30 AM
Location: Logan

This study examines childhood trauma histories, psychiatric symptoms, and personality traits of mothers of children who engage in masturbatory behavior. Mothers of 33 children with masturbatory behavior (MoCM) admitted to a hospital (Van-City/Turkey) and mothers of 45 children with no psychiatric history were evaluated using Symptom-Checklist-90-R, Childhood Trauma Questionnaire, Eysenck Personality Questionnaire (EPQ), and a sociodemographic history form. Mean age of MoCM was 33.23 (SD=5.34). Work status taken as covariate, all subscales of SCL-90 (except obsession and psychoticism), and all scores of EPQ (except extraversion) were significantly higher in MoCM compared to controls. Work status was a significant covariate (housewives higher) for all SCL-90 scores except for depression and paranoid ideation. Scores of emotional and sexual abuse, total trauma, and minimization (denial) of trauma were significantly higher in MoCM. Among MoCM, somatization was predicted by childhood physical neglect and interpersonal sensitivity was predicted by childhood sexual abuse. Additional items subscale of SCL-90 (physical complaints) was predicted by both sexual abuse and physical neglect. Diminished capacity of mirroring and of “body mentalization” among mothers of children with masturbatory behavior are proposed as possible agents of transmission of trauma between generations.
