How Neuroscience Informs Treatment

This workshop reviews the research from the expanding frontier of neuroscience towards the goal of developing a coherent model of treatment for emerging young adults. Emerging adulthood as a window of development distinct from adolescence and mature adulthood is defined along with vulnerabilities and risk factors. Research on brain maturation in emerging adulthood is presented along with alterations which occur resulting from trauma. Core principles of Developmental Neurobiology are presented and applied towards a coherent model for treatment of emerging adults. This model is organized around interventions for:



           The concept of core enactment is described as a focus in psychotherapy as it is the engine of archaic psychopathology undermining secure attachment in traumatized individuals. Finally variables affecting outcome from the last decade’s experience at Yellowbrick is presented.

Following his education at Yale, The Chicago Medical School, Northwestern University Medical School Psychiatry Residency and The Chicago Institute for Psychoanalysis, Dr. Viner has four decades of experience applying the knowledge of psychiatry and psychoanalysis to the challenge of creating meaningful and pragmatically effective treatment programs. He is a national expert in the areas of trauma recovery, eating disorders and severe personality disorders.
Dr. Viner has served on the faculties of the Chicago Institute for Psychoanalysis and as an Assistant Professor of Psychiatry at Northwestern Feinberg School of Medicine. He is a member of the Board of Trustees and Ethics Committee of the Chicago Institute for Psychoanalysis. Dr. Viner is Board Certified in Psychiatry and Forensic Psychiatry and a Distinguished Life Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association. He is the recipient of the Illinois Psychiatric Society 2016 Award for Excellence & Innovation in Clinical Services.
