Concurrent Session

Concurrent Group III



The concurrent sessions cover topics from across the spectrum of stem cell research. Each session, framed by a brief topic overview, includes one or two invited speakers whose work highlights leading research in the field. The session is rounded out with four or more abstract-selected speakers who, combined with the invited talks, give an excellent snapshot of the most current work on the topic. The five concurrent sessions run in parallel and attendees are encouraged to move between sessions to hear talks of interest. Concurrent sessions are held Thursday, Friday, and Saturday afternoons.

Deepak Srivastava, M.D., is President of the Gladstone Institutes, Director of the Roddenberry Stem Cell Center at Gladstone, and Professor at the University of California, San Francisco. Dr. Srivastava’s laboratory discovered genetic bases for human cardiac septal and valve defects and revealed complex gene networks that regulate progenitor cells to adopt a cardiac cell fate and subsequently fashion a functioning heart. He has leveraged this knowledge to reprogram fibroblasts directly into cardiomyocyte-like cells.

Hynek Wichterle

Hynek Wichterle is a Jerry and Emily Spiegel Associate Professor holding a joint appointment in the Departments of Pathology & Cell Biology and Neuroscience (in Neurology) at Columbia University. He received his M.S. degree from Charles University in Prague and his Ph.D. degree from The Rockefeller University under the tutelage of Dr Arturo Alvarez Buylla. He trained with Dr Thomas Jessell at Columbia University, where he became assistant professor in 2004 and associate professor in 2012. He serves as a co-director of the Center for Motor Neuron Biology and Disease. Dr Wichterle developed groundbreaking methods for producing spinal cord neurons from pluripotent stem cells. He is using the system to decode transcriptional programs that control neuronal differentiation and to study motor neuron degenerative diseases.
