The plenary sessions showcase speakers who will inspire and invigorate all attendees with cutting-edge research and thought. Francois Guillemot

The Francis Crick Institute, United Kingdom

Francois Guillemot obtained a PhD in Paris in 1989. His group has pioneered research on the transcriptional control of neurogenesis. He is currently Senior Group Leader at the Francis Crick Institute, London.
Research in the Guillemot group focuses on the interaction between transcriptional and epigenetic mechanisms in development of the mouse and human cerebral cortex, and on interactions between signaling and transcriptional mechanisms in adult hippocampal stem cells and migrating neurons.

Fredrik Lanner undertook his PhD thesis at the Karolinska Institutet in 2008 followed by postdoctoral research in Janet Rossants laboratory at The Hospital for Sick Children, Toronto. In Toronto he studied the role of FGF signaling in the early mouse embryo (Yamanaka et. al., Development 2010). Having returned to Karolinska Institutet, he started his independent lab in 2013. The lab has established a transcriptional road map of lineage specification and identified a distinct X-chromosome dosage compensation process that operates in the human embryo (Petropoulos et. al., Cell 2016). Through a proteomic approach the lab has identified cell surface markers that distinguish naïve and primed pluripotent stem cells (Collier et. al., Cell Stem Cell 2017).

We study how cells make fate decisions, using mammalian hematopoiesis and erythropoiesis as model systems. We recently traced the entire erythroid trajectory in mouse bone marrow and fetal liver using single-cell RNA-seq, providing an unprecedented view of the very earliest stages of blood lineage differentiation (Tusi et al., Nature 2018). We identified a cell-cycle - synchronized cell fate switch that activates erythroid differentiation and shown that it takes place during a faster, shorter S phase, as a result of a genome-wide acceleration of replication forks (Pop et al., PLoS Biology 2010, Hwang et al., Science Advances 2017).

Douglas A. Melton

Ernest McCulloch Memorial Lecture

Dr. Melton is the Xander University Professor at Harvard and an HHMI Investigator. He is also Co-director of the Harvard Stem Cell Institute. Research in the Melton laboratory focuses on the developmental biology of the pancreas and diabetes. The lab aims to make human islet cells for diabetics and find ways to thwart immune rejection so that patients no longer require blood checks and insulin injections.
