Marcelo Guimaraes, MD, FSIR is the Director of the division of Vascular and Interventional Radiology and a Professor in dual appointment in the Department of Radiology and Radiological Science and Department of Surgery here at the Medical University of South Carolina. Dr. Guimaraes has made many scholarly contributions in the field. He has given over 300 presentations including recent talks on Iliac Vein Stenting, Management of Acute and Chronic Deep Vein Thrombosis, Splenic reduction, Radial access for Interventional Radiology procedures, and Recanalization of Complex Venous Occlusions. He has been primary author on 9 book chapters and19 articles on topics related to endovascular techniques and interventional radiology. He was Co-Editor of Embolization Therapy: Principles and Clinical Applications. He has participated in over 80 workshops and panels as moderator, coordinator, director and panelist at at prestigious national and international meetings.He has been principal investigator on over 25 trials including trials on Deep Vein Thrombosis and Venous Disease such as the ATTRACT trial (Acute Venous Thrombosis: Thrombus Removal With Adjunctive Catheter-Directed Thrombolysis) and the VIVO trial (Evaluation of the Zilver® Vena™ Venous Stent in the Treatment of Symptomatic Iliofemoral Venous Outflow Obstruction) as well as trials on the Treatment of Occlusive Disease in the Common and External Iliac Arteries and Treatment of Symptomatic Iliofemoral Venous Outflow Obstruction.
