Dr. Schiro is a physician at the Miami Cardiac & Vascular Institute. He completed his fellowship in Vascular and Interventional Radiology at MCVI in 2010. He joined MCVI as a full-time staff physician in January 2015 after working with Interventional Radiology Specialists, Inc in Washington, PA. His current areas of expertise are in treating Peripheral Arterial Disease, Venous Thrombosis, Pulmonary Embolism, and Vascular Oncology. He has been an active faculty member in ISET yearly since his fellowship as a speaker and moderator and in performing live case demonstrations.

Anthony Comerota, MD, FACS, FACC, received his medical degree from Temple University School of Medicine, general surgery residency at Temple University Hospital and vascular surgery fellowship at Good Samaritan Hospital. He served as a faculty member, Chief of Vascular Surgery, Program Director in General and Vascular Surgery at Temple University Health Sciences Center. Dr. Comerota served as Director of the Jobst Vascular Institute from 2002-2015 and Executive Director of Research, ProMedica and Jobst Vascular Institute from 2015-2016.

Akhilesh Sista

Dr. Sista is an Associate Professor and the Section Chief of the NYU Langone Division of Vascular and Interventional Radiology. He completed his Radiology residency at UCSF in 2009 and his IR fellowship at Stanford in 2011. He was an Assistant Professor in the IR Division of Weill Cornell Medical College from 2011-2016, and joined NYU in March of 2016.

Dr. Sista specializes in the endovascular treatment of venous thromboembolic disease (VTE). He has given >70 invited talks at international meetings on the topic and served on national committees. He has authored or co-authored >50 peer-reviewed publications, including clinical practice standards in the medical and radiologic literature. He is on the Editorial Board of Vascular Medicine and Seminars in Interventional Radiology. He is the national Principal Investigator (PI) for the EXTRACT-PE study, sponsored by Penumbra, Inc, and is on the national steering committee for the NIH-sponsored C-TRACT trial for chronic DVT. He chaired a multi-disciplinary expert consensus panel, sponsored by the Society of Interventional Radiology Foundation, that identified research priorities for submassive pulmonary embolism. As the prior site PI for the ATTRACT trial, ACCESS-PTS, and the PERFECT registry, he is involved in national and local research looking into improving outcomes for patients with VTE. His research is also translational, as he received grant funding from the Radiological Society of North America to investigate the physiologic consequences of submassive pulmonary embolism in a porcine model with an eye towards optimizing the safety and efficacy of catheter-directed therapy for submassive PE patients.

Keith M. Sterling

Dr. Sterling is an interventional radiologist who has been in practice in Northern Virginia since 1995. He is Chief of Cardiovascular & Interventional Radiology of the Association of Alexandria Radiologists and Medical Director of the Advanced Interventional Vein & Vascular Center. He is currently the President of the Medical Staff at Inova Alexandria Hospital.

He is a Fellow of the Society of Interventional Radiology. He maintains an appointment as Associate Professor of Radiology at George Washington University School of Medicine and has trained residents and fellows over his entire professional career. Dr. Sterling is a frequently invited lecturer and is a nationally-recognized leader in the field of IR. He has been principal investigator on numerous research trials involving thrombolysis and medical devices. He serves on multiple task forces and committees for the SIR and the Inova Health System. He has been consistently recognized by his peers as one of the “Top Doctors” in Washingtonian and Northern Virginia magazines.

Dr. Sterling graduated with honors in 1985 from Northwestern University with a B.S. in Electrical Engineering & Computer Science. He earned his medical degree from New York Medical College in 1989. He served his medical internship at Columbia University College of Physicians & Surgeons in New York. He was a resident in Diagnostic Radiology at Mount Sinai Medical Center in New York and fellowship in Interventional Radiology at the Mallinckrodt Institute of Radiology/Washington University School of Medicine.

His areas of special expertise are women’s intervention, VTE, PAD, vascular malformations and acute stroke therapy.
