3517 - Color Wars: Designing a Battlefield for Red Team that Maximizes Value for Blue Team

Wednesday, October 10
11:00 AM - 12:00 PM
Location: Floor 3: Mardi Gras H, G, F

Not all penetration tests are created equal. Many factors go into determining the value of the engagement, and many end with less than ideal results. In order to improve value, critical issues such as scope, rules of engagement, communication, and preparation can be manipulated to migrate the goal of the exercise from testing to training. And that small change will result in long term gains through the development of defensive capabilities.

In this talk, we will evaluate the flexible parts of a pen test, focusing on collaboration, as a means to train the defenders. In addition, we will show how a pen test can improve the whole cyber security program by testing incident escalation/response, and improve policies and processes for continuous monitoring.
